About Robert
From 2013 to 2017, I taught K12 English, Mathematics and Physics in China. This workload involved not only the teaching of these subjects, but also intensive engagement with the students in English conversation, reading and writing. My educational background is a Bachelor of Mathematics (B. Math - Wollongong 2003) and a Master of Arts in applied linguistics (MAAL - UNE 2009). It has been both an exciting and challenging task to bring them up to the required standard of the American, British and Australian education systems. These students have an earnest desire to study overseas at western universities, and there have been several students who have gained excellent results in these examinations, going on to study (e.g. business, dentistry, etc) in England, Canada and Australia. These schools as well as my fellow teachers have played an important part in their achievements.
Prior to this, the previous 5 years (2004 - 2009) were spent at an English Academy (Hagwan) in Seosan, South Korea (Tel: 82 (concealed information) Mr Lee or Ms Choi). I taught English at levels ranging from kindergarten (4 - 5 years old) to middle school (13- 14 years old). This gave me a tremendous opportunity to learn how to teach English as a second language to students whose culture was fundamentally different from my own. The often difficult task of speaking slower than normal, as well as at a suitable level of comprehension for each class; gave me the required tools of instruction to teach my mathematics and physics students later in China. I did attempt to learn the Korean language, since it seemed that it would help to understand the students' approach to grammar and pronunciation in their second language. In addition, it enabled me to have a deeper understanding of phonetics, phonology, morphology, syntax and semantics in my linguistics (MAAL) course.

It is based on the conceptual change theory (Posner et al 1982). Firstly, students need to be dissatisfied with their current knowledge in tackling a new problem. This gives them a motivation to learn a new method. Secondly, what they learn should be understandable, using the KISS principle (keep it simple). Thirdly, it should be believable, otherwise students will not accept new ideas. Finally, I try to emphasize the usefulness of any new idea introduced, so again the student is motivated to learn the subject matter.
