I teach maths as the science of patterns; these patterns can be beautiful and pop up all around us in our everyday lives: within music, architecture, textiles, physics & computer algorithms, to name a few.

The more you understand a subject, the less you actually have to memorise. Even times tables, which are generally taught by rote, can be broken down into very clear patterns. Maths is the science of patterns, and numbers are just a tool for quantifying these patterns. I really enjoy inspiring my students to find beauty within these patterns, which hopefully makes the subject easier to understand.

I tailor my lessons to the individual needs of the student and encourage my students to ask questions whenever they want to. I use visual diagrams and written notes to break down complex ideas and explain new concepts. I provide practice questions for the student to apply their new knowledge and understanding.

  • When did you develop an interest in your chosen field and in private tutoring?

I have been passionate about mathematics and music since early childhood. My mum remembers me practicing my sums whilst in the bath at the age of 4, and I started playing the piano when I was 9. I started my career as a tutor when I was 18 years old, after finishing secondary school.
  • Tell us more about the subject you teach, the topics you like to discuss with students (and possibly those you like a little less).

I love teaching maths and encourage my students to understand it as the science of patterns, to use their visual and spatial instincts to guide the more conventional analytical methods. I enjoy the elegance of pure mathematics but also think it's important to help students to see how these abstract concepts can be applied to real-world problems, e.g. within music, architecture, textiles, computer science and even cooking.
  • Did you have any role models; a teacher that inspired you?

I had many wonderful teachers growing up, and I am still friends with some of them. I have a few music teachers who I see quite regularly, and one of them was also a maths teacher of mine. His name is Lawrence Ball and he would use our maths lessons as a springboard into other subjects such as music composition, the physics of sound and even philosophy.
  • What do you think are the qualities required to be a good tutor?

Patience, generosity of spirit and clear communication. A deep understanding of your subject is of course essential and years of teaching experience is invaluable.
  • Provide a valuable anecdote related to your subject or your days at school.

When I was 9 years old I loved maths and thought I was pretty good at it, but when I was assessed by a Kumon (Japanese system of education) professional I was only slightly above average for my age. This was because they took into account the amount of time it took me to answer the questions, and I was quite slow because I was methodical and thorough in my approach. This taught me that it is important to strike a balance between accuracy and speed; they are both required in equal measure in order to develop confidence and achieve one's potential.
  • What were the difficulties or challenges you faced or still facing in your subject?

It was a challenge for me to speed up my working. It's not a skill that came naturally to me, especially as I take pride in being thorough and detailed when solving problems. However with regular timed practice, which is fundamental to the Japanese Kumon system, and can be quite repetitive, I was able to increase my speed without compromising my accuracy.
  • Do you have a particular passion? Is it teaching in general or an element of the subject or something completely different?

I am passionate about life-long learning. When we are young we can soak up information and new ideas more easily, but I believe it is possible to learn new things throughout one's adult life also. This not only inspires enthusiasm and wonder for the world around us, but has also been proven to fend off dementia, whether it is learning a new language, a musical instrument or new maths skills!
  • What makes you a Superprof (besides answering this interview questions :-P)

I have been teaching for half my life (17 years) and don't ever want to stop. Sharing my knowledge and experience with my students brings me a huge sense of wellbeing and I love the idea that we are all standing on the shoulder of giants: our ancestors were ingenious and their discoveries enrich and inspire our lives in the modern world. I hope that people will look back at my teaching legacy in a similar way.
