About Phil

I am an experienced primary school teacher/tutor who lives with my partner and young children. I enjoy sport including football, tennis, American football and travelling.

I have taught in primary schools since qualifying in 2011. I have class teaching experience with all year groups from nursery to year 6 and have particularly strong experience with lower key stage two.

4 years ago, I made the jump from class teaching to private tutoring. I currently tutor whilst also looking after my young children when they are not at nursery. I tutor between 30 and 40 children each week from year 1 through to year 7. Some of these children I have been tutoring for a long time. I am tutoring children for a variety of reasons such as to boost confidence, bridge gaps in learning, prepare for local 11+ examinations or school tests and sometimes to enable really academically gifted children to excel even further.

About the lesson

I offer professional tuition to Primary aged pupils using a patient, calm and caring approach. I will always do my utmost to ensure that a child understands a concept and will work hard to give them the best chance at making good progress. I feel a real strength of mine is being able to build a great working rapport with pupils and parents. Another strength is my ability to promote a confidence increase in mathematics and also ensuring quick progress.

I now offer 1 to 1 online teaching sessions through zoom, although I may teach in your home if you live very close e.g. within a mile or so.

I share all activities on screen, which allows pupils to respond in written form or verbally. This method has been successful for many pupils. For example, children I have taught have passed 11+ tests for schools including Stretford and Urmston as well as schools as far away as Buckinghamshire! All you need is a computer with webcam and microphone. A graphics pad/pen is also useful to make it easier for your child to write on screen (these can be purchased for around £30 and I can show you a suitable one).

I teach online using an interactive whiteboard, worksheets, text books and learning games. I can also help children to complete work they have been given by their school. Homework can be provided if required.

I am happy to provide a short introductory lesson of 30 mins to enable your child to become familiar with the zoom system and would use this time to do a quick assessment to provide areas for future learning (if required).

I have a particular interest in tutoring maths, reading/comprehension and 11+ . I am skilled and experienced in tutoring for CEM and GL exams. I have taught these successfully for the last 4 years.

Online sessions are £20 per hour.

I have a current DBS and am registered with the DBS update service. This can be Viewed by you on request.

Phil is only the second tutor my son has had but I rate him excellent. He is very friendly, calm, approachable and easy going which I think has helped my son engage with him. My son definitely has a better understanding of maths since he`s been tutored by Phil.
