About David
Though retired from London Metropolitan University, I am still keen to remain active in academic and intellectual life. I much enjoy working with young people. Contact and responses from widely varying student communities is stimulating and rewarding.
Relations with my students were excellent. They were almost entirely good-natured and appreciative and I believe I was able to develop the skills and prospects of the greater part of those I taught.
Teaching role at LMU:
My main area of activity was lecturing the introductory module (title Studying Law); public law -constitutional law and administrative law at undergraduate level and I also lectured and tutored public law and jurisprudence to graduate students taking the GDL course for several years including EU law to them as well undergraduates.
I have also taught Tort; Property Law and the Law of Evidence as well as performing pastoral duties.
We had a very mixed ethnic student body; from many local Bangladeshi students, especially ladies, many Nigerians and west Africans to East Asians and a wide variety of Europeans from east and west. I never encountered any impossibly awkward problems but I learned the limits:
avoid internal politics as far as possible and keeping the interests of the students uppermost in one's mind.
One has a contract with the students and so priorities need to be strict. A collaborative atmosphere, partnership, and not teaching in a bubble and keeping in mind the other study areas students were coping with.
The “economics” of learning and the “rate of return”, is a vital theme and nowhere more than in a vocational course. Extensive reading, especially complete judgments, such as the “Factortame” case-law is always stressed.
Balancing on-line sources and techniques Is always a challenge. Enthusing students means avoiding approaches that are routine or too predictable. In many of my topics keeping an eye on the news always helped as did running analogies with sports, celebrities or popular events (eg Campbell v MGN [2004] UKHL22), it helps stimulate analytical methods.
A permanent awareness of the political backdrop is vital when dealing with public law. Supervising student projects/ dissertations helped here. Curriculum development and quality management were helped by imposing a strict marking discipline keeping in mind the professional context.
One cannot go anywhere, particularly in the geographical and cultural region in which I have been working, without an acute awareness of the equal opportunities context.
