About Daniel

Every person is capable of making music and we are all better off in this world when we do. That said, the learning curve for most instruments can be intimidating. I distinctly remember starting my first instrument, the violin, when I was just 7 years old. The seemingly endless screeching I created was so horrifying it reduced me to tears. I thought that I would never improve, but that was just the beginning. Almost 30 years later, and I still make music each and every day. I pride myself on helping beginners to take the plunge.

I am a versatile career educator with a masters in education from the University of the Pacific with more than ten years experience teaching in preschool and elementary settings. In between school years I have taught art and music at Hidden Valley Camp in Freedom, Maine. While I, myself, am most adept on the guitar and the banjo, I also play some mandolin and piano, and I have started learning the cello. I relish the challenge of a new instrument. It brings out the best in me. I love helping others take on this same challenge. Learning a new instrument benefits all aspects of personal growth and development. It requires us to stretch ourselves creatively and to be disciplined, two things that most of us could use a little more of.

My musical interests are extremely varied and I listen to all genres from Johnny Cash to John Coltrane. My own playing focuses on traditional American music, including folk, bluegrass, blues, and rock and roll. I am largely self-taught and much of my teaching focuses on helping beginners feel empowered to become life-long learners and music makers.

Adaptability is my greatest trait as an educator and it factors heavily into my approach to teaching music. Unlike many music teachers, I do not have a specific agenda. I am not interested in telling students, especially young children, what their long term goals as musicians should be. Instead, my primary goal is to help beginners get over the daunting first step so that they can start having fun and feeling expressive as quickly as possible. Making music should feel good, right from the start. As such, I tend to put less emphasize on theory and practicing scales. That can come in time. Rather, I believe that it is important to get new players hooked by helping them play simple versions of the music they love. I emphasize, rhythm and feeling, starting with basic open chords. With a small arsenal of open chords a person becomes a musician and can bring countless favorite tunes to life. The addition of a handful of basic picking styles and techniques gives the player literally endless combinations and permutations to explore and enjoy.
