About Sophie

I am a fully qualified maths teacher with 15 years of tutoring experience and 8 years of classroom teaching experience, supporting students of all abilities to develop confidence, improve their understanding and achieve their goals.

I became a maths teacher because I enjoy helping young people overcome barriers to learning. Seeing a student go from feeling anxious or lacking confidence to believing in their own ability is the most rewarding part of my job. I particularly enjoy helping students discover that maths does not have to be something to fear, and that with the right support it can become a subject they even enjoy.

My teaching style is calm, friendly and approachable. I create a supportive environment where students feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and developing their understanding at their own pace. Every lesson is tailored to the individual student, with 45–60 minute one-to-one sessions designed around their needs, goals and learning style.

I specialise in:

Key Stage 3 Maths
GCSE Maths (across a range of exam boards)
Functional Skills Maths
Exam preparation and exam technique
Building confidence and improving mathematical understanding
Supporting students with maths anxiety

I also have 4 years' experience teaching maths in a specialist setting, working with students with a range of additional needs, including neurodiverse students, students with dyslexia and students with dyscalculia. I understand that difficulties with maths are not always about ability; sometimes students need different approaches, more time to process information, or a different way of engaging with the subject.

Where appropriate, I use creative approaches such as maths games and activities to help reduce anxiety, build confidence and make learning more enjoyable.

My aim is not only to help students improve their grades, but to help them become more confident, independent learners who feel capable of tackling maths positively and achieving things they may not have thought possible.

I believe that every young person should have the opportunity to access high-quality maths support, regardless of their financial circumstances.

I recognise that private tutoring is not always accessible for every family, so I offer reduced rates for students eligible for Free School Meals. My aim is to help make personalised maths support available to students who may benefit from it most.

I also volunteer my time supporting refugee students with English and maths tuition.

Supporting young people is at the heart of why I teach, and I am passionate about helping students overcome barriers, develop confidence and achieve their goals.

My approach to tutoring is centred around understanding the individual student first. Every student learns differently, so I tailor lessons to their current level, learning style, confidence and personal goals.

At the beginning of tuition, I take time to understand what the student finds challenging, what they would like to improve, and any worries they may have about maths. This allows me to create lessons that target specific areas for development while also helping students build confidence and a more positive relationship with the subject.

A typical lesson may include:

Reviewing previous learning and addressing any misconceptions
Introducing or developing new concepts in a clear and accessible way
Practising skills through carefully chosen examples and activities
Developing problem-solving skills and mathematical thinking
Building exam technique and confidence with exam-style questions where appropriate
Reflecting on progress and identifying next steps

For students preparing for exams, lessons can focus on GCSE preparation, exam technique, understanding mark schemes, and building confidence when tackling unfamiliar problems. For students who are less confident or experience maths anxiety, the focus may be on strengthening foundations, reducing fear around maths and helping them feel successful through achievable steps.

Having experience teaching in both mainstream and specialist settings, I understand that some students need alternative approaches to access maths successfully. I use a range of methods, including visual explanations, practical examples and maths games where appropriate, to make learning more engaging and help students develop confidence.

My teaching style is calm, patient and encouraging. I want students to feel comfortable asking questions, making mistakes and taking their time to develop their understanding. My aim is not only to help students improve their maths skills, but also to help them become more independent, resilient learners who feel confident in their own ability.

While I typically offer 45–60 minute lessons, I can also accommodate shorter 30-minute sessions where this would better suit the student's age, concentration level or individual needs. These sessions can include a mixture of targeted maths activities, discussion, practice and maths games where appropriate, helping students build skills while developing confidence and enjoyment in the subject.

The most important thing is that each student receives support in a way that works best for them and helps them make meaningful progress.
