About Jesse Frances

I used to fear the audition room. That’s because I once believed there were only two realities waiting for for me on the other side of that door: pass or fail. It wasn’t until I let go of that very notion that I began to see things change and my work evolve. My overarching goal as a private audition coach is to help my students reject the notorious binary that an audition has only two outcomes. This notion begins to take root in young actors when we are told over and over again that “making it” in this business is one in a million, whatever that means. I believe this sets up the next generation of story-tellers for a tense and fearful life in the arts. When we go into the audition room operating from the pass/fail binary, we burn out faster, making it easier to abandon our dreams. What if we instead saw the opportunity to get into an audition room as a gift all by itself? What if we began to recognize what a win it is just to meet the folks behind the table, thus growing our artistic circle? When we operate from a place of fear and self- doubt, we cannot do our best work; our performance or audition is restricted because of our own thinking. Long term, the win/lose lens will ultimately eliminate the possibility for an abundant artistic life.

As a recent graduate of the Juilliard School's Drama Division, I came to learn that when we are primped, sculpted and polished down to the artist we believe other people want us to be, we lose the true essence of who we are as a performer. I work with students to break this cycle and to come back to their true, artistic selves. Getting back to our core requires discipline, but ultimately it allows them to stay grounded in the often pressurized environment of the audition room. I work with my students to come back to the material, roles, writers and stories that excited them about this art form in the first place. From there we evaluate what we believe it takes to embody such material, and then, go on to build a sustainable preparation and self-warm up routine tailored just to them and their specific strengths. By doing this, the actor begins to take back their power in the audition room. I used to fear that place. Now I itch for my chance to walk through those doors as often as I can. There’s nothing more gratifying when I am able to partner with my students to do the same.

The Juilliard School:

I recently graduated fromThe Juilliard School with my Bachelor’s Degree in Fine Arts in Drama. Prior to that I was studying musical theatre at Pace University in New York.

The Bay Area:

An East Bay native, I grew up pursuing theater on both sides of the Caldecott Tunnel. I was heavily involved in any training I could get my hands on, from ballet, to voice lessons, to audition technique. My Bay Area credits include American Conservatory Theatre, Center REP, Contra Costa Musical Theatre, Stars 2000, and Bay Area Cabaret.

Currently:

I now live in Brooklyn where I divide my time between teaching over Zoom and filming self-tape auditions. I am repped by Artists & Representatives, Swiontek Entertainment, and A3 Artis

About the lesson
