About Kate

Having graduated from one of the top MFA programs in the country, I have a wide array of training techniques to pull from when teaching my students. However, my belief when it comes to teaching actors is “Tools, not Rules”. If a technique isn’t serving you, discard it - or at least save it for later examination, perhaps someday it will unlock that one character who is eluding you, or that tricky sentence you just can’t memorize.

Acting is as much about self-discovery as it is about technique and training. I love getting to know and foster the inner life of my students, watching them grow as people and artists while they explore monologues, songs and scenes. One of my favorite quotes from Oscar Wilde: “Man is least himself when he talks in his own person. Give him a mask, and he will tell you the truth.”

Once I began attending NYU, friends began asking if I would coach them on monologues for auditions. I always enjoyed watching someone grow over the course of an hour, make discoveries and face fears, so it was a pleasure to be a guide for my fellow artists as they worked.

I attained my MFA in Acting at NYU’s Graduate Acting program, where actors such as Debra Messing (Will & Grace), Mahershala Ali (Moonlight), Peter Kraus (Six Feet Under), and Marcia Gay Harden (Pollock) also trained. I also trained at the Royal Academy of Dramatic Arts in London, and received extensive training in Shakespeare’s text at Shakespeare & Company in Lenox, MA. Additionally, I’m a working actor! That’s a constant training experience that I’m grateful to have.

About the lesson

I like to have an initial meeting with my students to get to know them. I ask about “dream roles”, favorite movies or plays, discuss road blocks in their work, and find out what it is about acting they love most of all. After that initial meeting, if my student is without any pieces to work on, I’ll round up a few monologues and send them over.

From grade school to grad school and beyond!

Acting is about collaboration, not cooperation. Choose someone who asks you to do things that challenge you, things outside of your comfort zone. Growth isn’t easy and can feel, at best, uncomfortable. It’s important to have someone who can bear witness to your struggle and encourage you to keep going when you don’t know how to take the next step!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Think about your goals. Do you want to work up the courage to go to that EPA you’ve been eyeing for weeks? Do you want the confidence to speak in front of a room of strangers? Do you want to grow your imagination, or understand Shakespeare better? Whatever it is, think about your goal, and bring it to your teacher - a good teacher will help you refine and specify that goal, making it into something achievable, given the right amount of work and study.

Details

Usually I charge $60/hr, so a 45 minute lesson is $45, a 30 minute lesson is $30. For children 9 and under, 30 - 45 minutes is a fine amount of time; for adults looking to sharpen their skills, I recommend the full hour.
