About Phillip

Whether your ambition is to grace the silver screen or simply to better your ability to effectively communicate, the methods and techniques that I have developed in my 15 years on stage and screen will serve to make your performance more natural, connected, and impactful.

With a resume that spans from local fringe theatres to professional regional playhouses, from student web series to prime-time television, and indie buget flicks to major motion pictures, I am well versed in the industry and able to answer your questions as well as guide you in sustainable methods of truthful performance.

I consider each student individually; the unique goals, obstacles and experiences you bring to the table will inform our journey together toward truth in each performance.

There is nothing quite as thrilling as the stage. I learned from a young age that immersing oneself in a character, empathizing with the imagined circumstance of some other written being, is a unique challenge and truly rewarding pleasure.

I enjoy the suspension of disbelief involved in acting, the challenge of memorization and the vicarious emotional experience of every performance.

My first experience teaching performing arts was through a local outreach program through the Orange County School of the Arts which allowed students there to teach free classes to the children of marginalized neighborhoods in the city. While the students were young, they gained confidence through learning to perform and empathy through working with others as an ensemble.

I have been performing as an actor for 15 years. I made my professional debut as a young teenager at the South Coast Reparatory in A Christmas Carol. After studying there for four years, I transitioned to the Orange County School of the Arts, in the Theatre program. Additionally, I have taken numerous improvisation courses at the Upright Citizen's Brigade in Los Angeles. In 2013 I began pursuing professional film/TV work, and have since landed roles on NCIS, Modern Family, and Fear the Walking Dead.

About the lesson

The process varies whether the student is receiving ongoing lessons from me or I am consulting on a specific project.

For ongoing students, we begin with an exploration of material across genres (e.g. comedy, drama, horror) and mediums (e.g. film, tv, theatre). Familiarizing the student with personally relevant and notable works enables them to learn what they enjoy and, more importantly, identify possible and desired roles to prepare for. Together we set goals for the student, identify obstacles and set benchmarks to be achieved through further study.

After that initial exploration (which involves a bit of reading, admittedly), we begin to learn and practice the technique of acting. This ranges from very the technical scene breakdowns used to comprehend the language of a piece to the uniquely emotional process of identifying personally with a role and empathetically immersing oneself in it.

If hired for a specific project, the process is similar, however much more in-depth. The study of the character's language, both verbal and non-verbal, becomes much more integral. Furthermore, because of the interactive nature of most projects, I will attempt to arrange a scene study with another student or associate of mine.

My experience in teaching and guiding actors is mainly as Director and Assistant Director in both the film and theatre environments. While there are a greater number of concerns while working as a Director, the method taught and guidance given to each actor is essentially the same.

Additionally, I have consulted with peers in their preparation for auditions and performances, alike, again, in both the film and theatre worlds.

An educated and well-read mentor is essential, and those who've learned from the best often emulate them. However, more important than any degree or class is a working knowledge of the craft. Be sure that your teacher is actively engaged in the kind of work you want to be doing.

I recently had the opportunity to travel for my acting work. My role on Fear the Walking Dead filmed in Rosarito, MX, and the journey, location and project all surpassed my expectations and were immensely rewarding.
