About Carter

I train actors to be both liberated and technically sound through the power of breath, imagination, clarity of action and behavior and the joy of in the moment personal invention.

I received my bachelors in Directing from SMU and my MFA in Acting from Yale School of Drama. Abroad I trained in Shakespeare at the British American Drama Academy in London and Clown and Game with Philippe Gaulier in Paris. During my post graduate training I apprenticed in the pedagogy of physical theatre at the Juilliard School. I am currently a recurring character on an Amazon series shooting in New York, a faculty member in SMU's Theatre Dividionand the primary movement director for Dallas Theatre Center. I teach experienced / professional actors and those new to acting - at SMU, UNT, Pace University and NYU.

Some of my former students include Lupita Nyong’o and Winston Duke from Black Panther Zuzannah Szadkowski and Grace Duha from Gossip Girl and Juliana Canfield from Succession.

If an actor has fun while they learn, they are more likely to internalize their successes and put less stock in their setbacks. They discover the pleasure of performance, the satisfaction of problem solving in real time, and the confidence to behave with spontaneity while you perform - truly expressing themselves. When I help an actor bring what's unique about them to a character whilst also having a good time, I am totally fulfilled.
