About James

The creative team from Inland stage, an innovative theater company founded in 2003, formed the bones of an exciting and innovative new media content company called Fidelis Digital Media in 2019. With roots in life theater and film production, our group offers a unique perspective on the film ministry and offer acting instruction of all types.

I started teaching acting as a Theater student in the early 90s.

In addition to 40+ years of experience in live theater as a director and an actor, Jim Marbury is a current student at Los Angeles film school, and a prior student at De Anza College of film and television department. Jim is an emerging independent filmmaker who, in addition to his school projects, has a number of other projects in development.

About the lesson

After determining the level of the actors experience, a custom program is proposed to make the actor feel more at ease in front of the audience or camera. Resume and online presence will be evaluated and improved. Monologues and scene work on camera will be done. Advanced work, such as action/intent and lens technique will be covered, but deeper study into technique is a matter of taste. I have worked with all kinds of students from all kinds of backgrounds. I ran a pilot program that was designed to use improvisation for kids with special needs, for example.

There are a lot of people who can present themselves as experts in this field, but you will be able to tell within the first session with them whether they are legit. In addition, a teaching relationship is a matter of preference. Some people just don't click. That's why I offer my first session for free.

I am particularly fond of inland Stage's productions of Rocky Horror and our Shakespeare program.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
If I were an actor who is trying to break into the film industry looking to hire an acting coach, I would have material ready and an interest in the kind of film that I would like to do. If I were an actor who is looking to get bigger parts in the theater, I would focus in on understanding the process. Live theater and film are very different techniques. They are rooted in essentially the same thing, but you come at your performance from a different place. Someone once said "acting on stage is a high wire act with no net. Acting for film is a wire act with the net, but the wire is on the ground." It's important to know the difference.

Standard pricing is $500 upfront, eight session minimum, $100 per class. Each class will be at least one hour but no longer than 90 minutes.
