About Mia

I have been interested in teaching since a young woman.  I love process and learning and as I've gotten older and I hope wiser, I've become more the teacher I wish I had growing up. At the same time, I am grateful to all of my mentors who helped me along the way.  It is a collaborative process really.

Mia received my M.F.A. in Theatre Arts through the University of Washington's Professional Actor Training Program. A member of AEA and SAG-AFTRA, she has been working as a professional actor since 1997 and as a teaching artist upwards of 25 years.

Mia has appeared in theatres across the U.S., and the U.K., including the Lincoln Center, Cherry Lane, George Street Playhouse, Shakespeare Theatre (DC), Capital Rep, Hartford Stage, Portland Center Stage, Virginia Stage, Camden People's Theatre (London), Denver Center, and with the Royal Shakespeare Company at the Barbican and on tour. In the Bay Area, she has performed at CalShakes, Magic, SF Shakes, Theatreworks, ACT, Berkeley Rep, Aurora and Crowded Fire.  As a teaching artist in the bay area, Mia has worked with Theatreworks, San Jose Rep, SF Shakespeare, Stagewrite, and Performing Arts Workshop.

As a vocal coach, Mia has had the honor of working with executives, entrepreneurs, english language learners - introverts and extroverts. Her voice coaching is influenced by many master teachers of voice including Patsy Rodenburg, Cecily Berry and Kristin Linklater. She considers her 4 years of in-depth study with the late Angeles Arrien author of the Four Fold Way as important inspiration in her work.

Typically, there will be an initial phone consultation where we get to know one another. I will ask some questions about your needs and goals. You will get a sense of me and will decide if you want to meet in person for a session or more. In our session, we will begin with a check-in before getting to work. The check-in will allow me to see/hear where you are at physically and vocally. Our work next will include both physical and vocal warm-ups depending on your needs. Then there will be specific exercises next tailored to your specific goals. We end in a debrief looking at what worked and how we might proceed for the next session. It will also include home work. I will follow-up with an email recapping our session.

I have worked with students as young as 3 years old and as old as 86.  I have worked as a teaching artist in schools, camps; a teaching assistant of undergraduates; individuals with no acting/voice background; english language learners; those with special needs or abilities; exectutives; artists; introverts and extroverts. Currently, I am working with adults (18+) only

I would look for a teacher with practical knowledge of the subject - someone who doesn't just teach but does. I would find a teacher that is honest and clear; someone who is more encouraging than ego.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What are your goals? What are you wanting from a teacher/coach?What are your assumptions about what a teacher/coach can do for you?  What has worked for you in the past as far as teaching styles?
