About Alan

I have been an actor and acting teacher for over 40 years. Currently, I teach two courses at the Working Actor Studio in New York City: Scene Study/Voice-over Intensive and Musical Performance. As a working actor/director/producer/writer, I understand acting from the performer's point of view as well as the director's. I was also a voice-over casting director in Los Angeles for 15 years, so I bring that experience and knowledge to my voice-over teaching.

I try to create a safe and pleasant environment in which to work. I think acting should be fun. I want to transfer my love of my craft to my students and pass on what knowledge I have gleaned from more than 50 years of acting. My students are at ease and comfortable and tend to laugh a lot during their lessons. Acting lessons should not be associated with dread but with love of the craft.

I started teaching when I was in my early 20s. My undergrad degree is in education, and I taught teens acting at the Height Youtheatre in Cleveland Hts., Ohio.

I have an MFA in Acting from Ohio University where I studied under Bob Hobbs. I also studied for over 10 years in New York with the legendary Wynn Handman. I have been acting for 60 years and have been a voice-over actor for 30 years.

About the lesson

I will ask them to present their scene/monologue without any initial input from me. I can then ascertain what their strengths are and what they need to work on: reality, images, subtext, actions, objectives, etc.

I've worked with students from every age range and level of proficiency. I adjust my level of coaching to the wants and requirements of the student.

Temperament is the most important factor. You need to find a teacher who is positive and encouraging, yet able to talk frankly to you about what you need to work on. Fear and dread have no place in acting training.

I saw a revivial of Tom Stoppard's TRAVESTIES and it was one of the best nights I've ever had in the theatre. The actors were not only well-suited to their roles and talented, but they committed fully to what they were doing. I love when an actor has the confidence to go full out with their acting.
