About Reece

In addition to my experience as a teacher (which I elaborate on below), I am available for career consultations and audition strategy. I believe it is necessary to integrate these services alongside acting technique. The performing arts are a competitive arena, and students benefit greatly from learning how to navigate that field. Being a talented performer with a strong technical foundation is paramount, but to showcase their technical skills and talent, students must be grounded in high pressure auditions, understand how to access auditions, learn strategies for approaching callbacks, how to handle commercials, etc.

I believe the most rewarding part of teaching is watching a student’s confidence blossom when they overcome a challenge. This confidence becomes the cornerstone that enables a student to flourish as they go deeper into their training and become less focused on technical execution and more focused on artistry. It is thoroughly enjoyable for me to watch a student achieve that internal strength which frees them to handle material with a higher level of artistic sophistication.

My first experiences teaching children occurred in the dance studio. I trained in classical and contemporary ballet throughout my childhood and began training the younger classes during my late teens. In my classes, we concentrated on developing good habits and a thorough understanding of how to apply technique. I always believed strongly in not just showing a student the technically correct way of approaching a piece, but breaking down why/how that technique is effective. This approach will allow students to develop as performers in the long term, rather than taking shortcuts which might plateau the student’s growth at a future point.

After beginning a career as a professional actress, I began providing private coaching for acting students. The teaching practices that I developed as a dance instructor have carried over into my acting lessons.

I have been working as a professional actress in New York for years (and Atlanta before that…)

Being in New York City has afforded me the opportunity to train directly with the industry’s top acting coaches. Some of my coaches have been affiliated with NYU Tisch, some have theater backgrounds, some are preferred on-set coaches for Hollywood’s largest studios, but they have all taught me valuable lessons.

The acting methods I’ve been exposed to are largely derived from the Stanislavski’s Mentees and The Group Theater, but I’ve also studied more experimental methods. The breadth of my training has involved techniques developed by Stella Adler, Lee Strasburg, Peter Brooks, Sanford Meisner, Jerzy Grotowski and Robert Lewis.

Professionally, I have worked in various mediums as an actress. Beyond the highlights listed on my acting resume, I have established myself as a casting director selection for casting directors at some of the most esteemed offices in New York (including the office of the President of Warner Bros. casting on the East Coast).

About the lesson

*While NYC is under quarantine, sessions will only be available over skype or zoom!

First and foremost, I like to have a brief ‘consultation’ discussion with parents/students to answer some of their questions and establish what exactly they are looking for in a coach. If I know I’m not the coach to address a specific goal that student has, I would rather refer them to someone who can. If there is a very specific need a student expresses, we will develop a plan together. If not, there are two general approaches I take based on the student’s previous experience.

Beginners:

If the student is a complete beginner, I’ll provide a little sample scene for the first session. This will provide us a context to talk about beats, transitions, scoring the script, script analysis, and all the other various basics for approaching material on the initial read through. There are two main things the student needs to solidify before we move deeper into acting technique: understanding the vocabulary of acting, and how to read a script.

From here, we will begin introducing various methods/techniques that allow a student to ‘connect’ to the material and develop a character. Some techniques will be based on diverging acting theories, in order to give the students many different angles through which to approach the material. (After all, every piece of material is unique, and a method which the student prefers one day might be switched out the next for a new scene. Actors need a wide exposure to different techniques in order to do this). At this point, students will likely require more curated, specialized lessons moving forward and we approach sessions as we would for experienced students.

Experienced Students:

For experienced students requesting additional training, I ask them to suggest a monologue or scene to work on during our first coaching session. This can be a piece they’ve rehearsed extensively or something completely new that they’ve never performed at all. The point is I’d like to get a better sense of what material they are drawn towards and what they wish to work on. If I can see the content/scripts they like, I can fine tune future lessons.

During our first session they’ll perform the monologue or scene to the best of their ability (this is purely to help them ‘break the ice’ and help me establish our baseline, no one is getting graded here!) From there we’ll breakdown how they did/would approach the material, delving into what techniques and choices they are already employing. We’ll discuss their level of confidence with those techniques and where we might refine their process, introduce an alternative technique, improve their understanding of the material or a specific acting ‘tool,’ find other choices, etc. I’ll be asking a lot of questions about the material, and also ask the student to elaborate on where they felt good about their performance and where they felt themselves struggling. Throughout the conversation, I’ll be looking for areas where the student may grow so we can articulate our goals for their training. This will allow us to develop a game plan moving forward.

Most of my students have been elementary age and are in the beginning stages of their acting journey. I prefer working with this age group as they haven’t had time to develop bad acting habits, and it’s a wonderful opportunity to shore up the foundations of their training. This age group is also very creative and spontaneous in their choices as actors, which I feel provides an opportunity for accelerated growth under instruction that will guide and encourage their artistic instincts. That being said, I will work with students at all ages and stages!

Most importantly, students and their parents should do their research. There are widely followed acting methods/schools that believe in ‘breaking’ an actor to begin their training (usually involving methods designed to embarrass and destabilize the student in order to help ‘access their vulnerability’ then ‘build them up again’.) I cannot emphasis enough that I DO NOT believe in this method. Not only can it be very damaging, but it is actually counter-productive to a student’s development. I have seen actors work for years to counteract the negative impacts of an irresponsible and poorly qualified instructor. There are plenty of other widely regarded and well respected methods/schools that do not require this and, instead, emphasize building up their actor’s so as to make them stronger technicians, creative craftsmen, and bolder performers. If at any point a student feels that an instructor is trying to ‘break’ them, please leave that class. And don’t be afraid to ask follow up questions after researching an instructor. If you are still unclear about their process, just ask!

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Your goal should be finding ways to exercise acting craft with material that simultaneously interest you, challenges you, and is appropriate for you. Which type of roles/scripts are you interested in working on? What types of roles have you auditioned for mostly (you should definitely be checking in on these character ‘types’ occasionally)? Would you like to do material meant for the stage or scripts written for TV/Film/Web? Do you struggle more with comedy or drama? Do you like classical or contemporary? What role/character would you find intimidating to work on (you should definitely work on this at some point)? Do you have material you’d like a coach to work through with you? Or would you prefer them to select some basic scenes for you to work on? Are you looking for exposure to various acting techniques/methods to give yourself a general introduction to acting? Or is there a very specific technique (i.e. Adler, Strasberg, Vakhtongov, Meisner, etc.) that you’d like to delve into deeper? Are you struggling with acting technique or audition technique (there is a difference)? Do you need career consultation? The list of questions could go on and on, and while students don’t need an answer to every question, they should at least consider a couple to start. Most importantly, students should be able to articulate what their primary goal is in pursing acting coaching.

My standard pricing for a new student is $40 per hour of private coaching. If a student would like to purchase a bundle of classes it will be $100 for three hour long private sessions. Payments are required up front, and I am able to accept those payments via Paypal or Venmo.
