About Patrick

A Power lesson is already entertaining even before the performance begins. Lessons are engaging and get you in the mood to do your craft. "Preparation Kills Fear" is lesson one where we address Stage-Fright. Those preparations combined with experience will give boldness to the shyest of young actors. Mr. Power has been building self esteem in young aspiring actors for more than thirty years, specializing in Character Based and Situation Based Improv, melodrama, stand up comedy, stage combat, Greek Tragedy, and even the structure of playwriting, but known mostly for his decades of hosting one of the oldest Shakespearean Competitions in America. Mr. Power's SHARP memorization method is his own invention, and you can't find it anywhere else. Mr. Power has an MA in Theatrical Curriculum development from California State University, has worked with NBC as an animator, KBYU as a news graphic artist and on-air host, and has made eyecatching storyboards for preproduction companies submitting entires to MTV, Sundance, etc. His original plays have received many honors incouding the PEAAK awards and the Peg Pauly Trophy.

Mr. Power was trained by Tad Z. Danielewski in playwriting and directing, a former dean of theatre at USC and professor at BYU. Mr. Power has attended workshops conducted by Jimmy Stewart (It's a Wonderful Life), Carl Malden (The Streets of San Francisco), Robert Wise (The Day the Earth Stood Still, The Sound of Music, South Pacific), and Brian Vaughn (Featured resident actor/Artistic Director, Utah Shakespeare Festival). Power's MA is from Cal State Bakersifld, his BA is from BYU, and he has developed high school actors for 32 years from Foothill High in Bakersfield, California and Gilbert High, Gilbert, Az.

About the lesson

Getting to know the student is part of the beginning curriculum. Our first lesson begins with "The ID Bag" where the student uses the bag as a metaphor for who they are. Each side represents a different side of your life and the things hidden inside are your experiences, loves, fears, and values.

As the student emerges, he/she is directed into short challenges of voice, memorization, movement, and strategy until they are ready for scene challenges, eventually ready to do an entire play.
