About Tina
Hi! My name is Tina and I'm a 2nd year PhD student at UH, specializing in workplace psychology. I have over 4 years of experiencing tutoring students of all ages and levels across many subjects (both in-person and online). I provide tutoring for algebra, statistics, any of the social sciences, test-prep (PSAT, SAT, ACT, GED, GRE), general reading and writing, as well as help with essays, personal statements, and resumes.
My philosophy with teaching is that you don't truly understand a concept until you have to teach it to someone else. For this reason, I always make sure that my students are able to teach me what they learned before they leave the session - otherwise they haven't really learned anything!
For me, the greatest satisfaction that comes from tutoring is celebrating the amazing sense of accomplishment and confidence that students feel when they've finally mastered a concept. I genuinely love teaching and watching my students improve and succeed in an area that they struggled with not too long ago. I also love to learn myself and feel that regardless of the amount of times I've taught something, I'm always learning something new each time I teach it!
I started tutoring while in college first for a tutoring center, then an online tutoring agency, and eventually privately for myself.
I have over 4 years of tutoring experience both in person and online. I've completed a tutor training program at the Tutoting Club of Allen. I have worked with students in a variety of subjects at a variety of levels ranging from elementary school to the university level. I also have experience working with students who have learning diabilities.
Additionally, I hold a Bachelors of Science in Psychology and am currently a PhD candidate at the University of Houston where I work as a part-time teaching assistant for undergraduate level university courses.

In working with a new student, it's important to first assess their strenghts and weaknesses in the subject. I typically start by asking the student what they do know and having them demonstrate their knowldge of that concept. From there, we work together to figure out what pieces they are missing so that we can work on improving their weak spots. Additionally, I try to present the concept I'm teaching in multiple different ways as to determine the student's learning style as to ensure the most efficient and effective teaching method.
I've worked with students of all ages, backgrounds and in most general subjects.
Find someone who genuinely cares and wants to help you. Those are the teachers whom you learn lifelong techniques that serve you well-beyond one subject.
I once worked with a student who had a learning disability and believed it was impossible for her to learn a concept that she was struggling with for a very long time. I will never forget the joy on her face when she finally had the aha-moment after weeks of working putting in her all and still not understanding the material. She went on to ace her midterm soon after.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Am I open and willing to put in the time and effort necessary to understand the material?
2. Am I going to accept and embrace the methods that the tutor is teaching me?
3. What is my learning style and what teaching style best suits that?

Tina helped me out so much with my personal statement for the masters program I'm applying to. I was completely clueless as to what I needed to keep or improve and it was so awesome to have her guidance, because she really knows what they're looking for. The thing I liked most about working with Tina was that she was very honest with her critiques and revisions but she also made sure not to override my voice and what I wanted to say in the essay. Thanks again Tina!
I was really struggling with my college algebra class and Tina was great help! I would highly recommend her to anyone needing help with the subject.
Tina was super sweet and patient, she really helped clear up concepts that I was confused about
