About Dr B

Chemistry IS a difficult subject. In my classroom work I always look for the easiest way to explain things and the easiest way to work problems. My students have told me I'm the easiest-to-understand Chemistry teacher they've had.

I have BS and PhD degrees in Chemistry, 20+ years in industry and 10+ years in the classroom.

I enjoy the students, themselves. And I love the "aha! moment", when the student says, "Oh, so THAT is what that means" or how that works, etc. It's especially nice when they also say something like, "Why that's easy! I wish it had been explained like that before."

I was certified to teach Secondary Chemistry and Biology with my BS degree. When it became clear that industrial jobs were becoming more unstable and difficult to find, I switched my focus back to teaching.

I tutor Chemistry and related subjects.

To that end, I have BS and PhD degrees in Chemistry, over 20 years of industrial experience as a Chemist and over 10 years experience teaching Chemistry.

About the lesson

The first thing to find out is what is causing the student problems. As we work together, details will come to light that give more detail.

I have worked with both high-school and college students. At the Community College level, I've worked with many adult learners.

There is absolutely no substitute for experience. Education level is of secondary importance. If price is a major factor for you, you can ask for a reduction, but I have consciously set my price at a relatively low level for my amount of experience and degree level.

If, after the first session, you have trouble understanding or following what the tutor is trying to explain or the tutor is not answering your actual questions, try a different tutor. Not all tutors are a good "fit" for all students.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Exactly, in detail, what are my problem areas? "Everything" is probably not helpful.

2. How have I been studying the subject? How much time have I really been spending on it outside of class time?

3. Chemistry (and related subjects) are difficult. Am I willing to work harder to do better, or do I just want someone to make it so I don't have to do much at all?

Details

I divide my rates between online and in-person sessions.

Online sessions start at $40/hr for high school level Chemistry and go up for more advanced subjects.

In-person sessions (in public places only, never in the client's home or in my home) start at $75/hr. The higher rate is because of the added time and expense involved.
