About Ian

I am a nationally certified archery coach with over 20 years experience shooting and competing. I have successfully coached thousands of archers to shoot. Here are some of my credentials:

I love learning and instructing archery. I enjoy seeing my students excited about archery from the very first lesson. Seeing my students passionate about archery and reaching their goals is what keeps me motivated.

Through my love of archery I have always offered bits of advise to help aspiring archers learn to shoot with success. I found that there was such an overwhelming request that I decided to offer a local Parks and Rec class. Again I found the class was so popular, I took the next step and opened an archery range to professionally teach full time.

I have been shooting and competing in archery for over 20 years and have taught numerous archers to shoot with success. I am a certified USA Archery Level 4 NTS coach, head coach of Archery Santa Cruz's Junior Olympic Archery Development, and Adult Archery Development Programs, and head coach of University of Santa Cruz's archery club. From 2018-2020 I was a Coach for Lancaster Archery Supply’s Academy club and team JOAD as well as a expert technician in the Lancaster Archery Proshop.

About the lesson

I like to begin by talking about previous experience if you have any, but no experience is necessary! Then I like to discuss any sort of hopes and what the student would like to do with their archery. Over the years of teaching I have split my lessons into three levels. About 75% of my student are new to archery and in that case I usually suggest we start with the level 1 curriculum. Even after the very first lesson, you will learn a great deal of skills including how to shoot the bow efficiently, how to aim, general safety and some "do's and don'ts" of archery. If you enjoy the lesson and want to continue, I am happy to work with each student at their own pace and level in any style of archery they are interested in.

I have trained thousands of archers with all types of experience levels and age ranges. I have worked with disabled archers in wheel chairs and archers in their 80's. I coach a variety of styles of archery including traditional, olympic, and compound. If you have a curiosity or a love of archery and want to advance your skills I would be happy to help you achieve your goals.

If you are looking for an archery teacher, my advise is find a certified coach. There are so many people out there that are willing and eager to teach but the info they give may not be as efficent and beneficial as it would be coming from a certified coach. In fact sometimes, although I am sure it is unintentional, they give instruction that can be harmful. It is important to make sure you are receiving quality instruction that includes proper safety.

I would say the Rio Olympics. It is always a joy to see the best archers in the world shoting in top form. Gives me inspiration.

A few questions I suggest are:

What do you want to learn? Do you just want to learn for fun? Are you interested in the sport of competition archery? Are you interested in bow hunting?

Do you know what kind of bow you are interested in shooting? Recurve, Longbow, Compound?
