About MICHAEL
NOTICE: Due to COVID-19, all lessons will be online until further notice. I don't teach out of the same old "cookie cutter" bass & guitar books that many of my esteemed colleagues use. I have standard concepts that all musicians must master if they're going to be any good at all, but the lessons are customized to what the student wants to learn, no matter how easy or how hard! If you're motivated to get to a certain level, we'll get you there.
I've been teaching bass guitar for 30 years, and I graduated from Musicians Institute in 1989 with a degree in Bass Performance.
I love seeing students succeed at what they've set out to accomplish, and I love seeing the look on their face when they realize that it's a lot easier than they - or their previous teachers - have been making it out to be!
My local music store was looking for a house bass instructor, I raised my hand and said, "Pick me!", and off we went. At first it was a way to make money, then it became a way to better understand the things about music that I already understood innately, and finally it became the musical thing that I loved to do most of all - and that includes live performance!
I have a vocational performance degree from Musicians Institute (BIT) in Hollywood, CA, and I've had probably close to 1,000 different students since that time.

Everyone gets a 60-minute session on the house at first - this way, we can see what each of us is all about as teacher and student. I can see what they know, what they want to know, and what I think they need to know, and they can get an idea of my teaching style and capabilities, and decide whether or not I'm the right student for them.
Just about any type you can think of! Male, female, young, old, rightys, lefties, seasoned pros, rank amaeturs, rockers, jazzers, punkers, metalheads, proggers, even students with learning disabilities.
SHOP AROUND. Teaching styles vary from teacher to teacher; be sure that you find one that meets your needs and desires. Also, now that we live in the times of COVID-19, it's really important to ensure that you can do video lessons properly from your home; this includes having decent wi-fi, a desktop or laptop computer (not a dealbreaker, but it's much easier), and software that you can manipulate from your end to make the audio suitable for both you and your teacher.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Why do I want to take lessons in the first place? Am I happier just dinking around on the instrument and making discoveries about it on my own, or are there specific things I want to be able to do that I can't figure out? Are the things I want to learn from a teacher the same kinds of things I could learn from a YouTube video? Am I really going to put in the time to practice, or am I hoping that 30 min. of bass focus a week will make me improve? Can I find a teacher who will not only teach me what I want to learn, but point me in the direction of other things that will help me improve?

I charge by the month - $120 for at least 4 30-minute lessons (the odd month has 5 lessons for a given day, and that extra lesson is just included as a bonus). These lessons are for those who want to have a weekly scheduled lesson. Otherwise, I do "one-off" lessons - always for 1 hour - for $60, only scheduled one-at-a-time.
