About George

With thePhunk Bass Lessons, you will learn HOW to fish rather than being given the fish. In other words, the "what" is important to understand but, the "why/how" are the most important to internalize.

You will learn the fundamentals of how music is emotionally and logistically created, then, you will learn how to expand those concepts while never losing your place in that music. It's about understanding the foundation and developing your signature sound so you can enter ANY musical setting with ANY musicians for ANY set of chord changes at ANY time!

Specializing in the Jazz-RnB-Soul-Funk-Latin Jazz-Afro Cuban Jazz-Greek genres, some notable musicians George Howard has been in established arrangements with and/or played individual performances with include Myckale Thomas of The Commodores, Tony Lewis of Smokey Robinson, Maury Baker of the late Janis Joplin, Victor Orlando of Chaka Khan, The GAP Band, and Snoop Lion, Jay Jackson of Jay Jackson & The Soul Purpose Band (and actor on Parks N Rec, Scandal, Supergirl), Kiki Ebsen - Singer/Songwriter/Pianist and daughter of the late Buddy Ebsen from Beverly Hillbillies.

Some notable California based venues performed at include, House of Blues, Barbara Morrison Performing Arts Center, Vitello's, Canyon Club (opening up for Dave Sandborn and another time for Danny Serraphin of Chicago and CTA), HOME-Jazz Supperclub, Baked Potato, Key Club, Zanzibar, Loyola Marymount University. There are many additional venues and private events in George’s history as well.

What excites me about music and bass application [specifically] is the level of respect we as bassists need to have in order for the music to express its intention/message accordingly. Various harmonic, rhythmic and dynamic approaches are necessary for proper musical conveyance so, when we have a strong understanding for them, they offer many options for expressing ourselves effectively and effortlessly.

I have a minor in jazz bass performance, as well as, close to 25 years of professional performance, studio recording and instruction. I've been hired many times to help musical arrangements, bands, ensembles solidify their repertoire in an effort to prepare musical sets for performances.

About the lesson

First, I need to evaluate what skill level the student is currently at. I then assess what the student is actually interested in learning for both, their short term and long term goals. Once these are determined, I design a lesson plan that best suits their needs.
