Personally i like to get my student comfortable with knowing all parts of the bass and how they contribute to the sound of the bass. Then i teach the names of each string, notes on the fretboard, fingering technics, the difference between different notes, how to put them together to form a song, and some basic scale excersizes.
10 yrs and older as long as they were interested.
