About Elliot

I have been playing cello for nearly 30 years, and its ABSOLUTELY my greatest love!!! Throughout my time, I've been privileged to have studied with some of the finest cellists in the world, and carry on the lineage of the great cello teachings of the past.

I grew up in Pittsburgh and trained with several Pittsburgh Symphony cellists, primarily Michael Lipman and Anne Martindale Williams. My other notable teachers include Gordon Epperson and Nancy Green.

I've performed with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra, Washington Symphony (PA), attended PA Governor's School for the Arts, Soesterberg International Music Festival (Netherlands), Duquesne University, and the University of Arizona. Currently I'm playing with the Durham Medical Orchestra, through due to current times, we are not performing publicly.

I LOVE teaching beginning to intermediate players of ALL ages, and as things are in the world today with Zoom, there is no limit on distance! I'd love to help supplement some fun after-school cello help, or help young-at-heart players achieve a dream of being able to play a bit with confidence.

I also focus strongly on the mental aspects of playing the cello. Joy, frustration, delight, disgust, pride, success, nerves, accomplishment... All of these go along with playing, and I have yet to meet any musician that hasn't experienced these emotions in regards to playing their instrument. Mental practice (without the instrument) is also a key component of musical success, and it is extremely important to me to cultivate the right mind-set for musical success!

I believe in a kind, supportive, and nurturing environment for students! Cello is a very difficult instrument, and as a player myself, I understand the feelings of practice frustration and performance anxiety. I try to foster a mentality amongst all players to get past this!

Above all, the most important thing to me is to make lessons fun and encouraging, while covering as much material as possible with precious time.

In my own "cello teacher lineage", I carry with me the skills and teachings of some of the most famous cellists in history. These include Leonard Rose, Mstislav Rostropovich, Gregor Piatigorsky, Jacqueline du Pre, Orlando Cole, Lynn Harrell, and Pablo Casals to name a few.

Learning the cello is very much rooted in oral history, which can be traced back hundreds of years in many players. Its very humbling to me to be able to pass on these traditions, tips, and tricks to cellists of the future!

I started playing the cello at age 8, but was not terribly serious until High School. When I (finally!) started practicing, I improved rapidly (imagine that?!), which took me on to study with members of the Pittsburgh Symphony, performing and traveling with the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, and classical performance festivals both in the United States and in Europe. Beyond High School, I furthered my studies at Duquesne University in Pittsburgh, and the University of Arizona in Tucson, AZ. I've had some marvelously wild times performing, and a few "gigs" that stand out performing at Mr. Roger's 50th Wedding Anniversary celebration, performing for Her Majesty the Queen of Jordan, and as part of an opening act for Earth, Wind, and Fire. My orchestral experience includes the Pittsburgh Youth Symphony, Pittsburgh Civic Orchestra, Washington Symphony, and most recently, the Durham Medical Orchestra.

About the lesson

Get to know the student!!!! In my own experience studying under many teachers, I've achieved the most success when there is a sense of "teamwork" between teacher and student. I have found this teacher/student rapport to be crucial for success.

After assesing where a student is with playing the cello (anywhere from ground-zero, to being a fairly accomplished player), the best place to start is working toward a beautiful, singing tone. Honestly, more good things come from studying the bowing of open strings than even the most complex etude! (but the crazy etudes are important too, down the road!)

A very diverse group, to say the least! Fulfilling the dream of being able to play the cello is my specialty, for both the young and the young-at-heart!

BE SURE THAT YOU WORK WELL TOGETHER!!!!!!!!!!!! I can tell you FOR SURE, there is nothing more discouraging and damaging than a negative student/teacher combo.

Every day I dream of a time in the future where musicians are no longer confined to the internet, due to the ever-present health risks of current times.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
-What are your goals?

-Ability to play the cello is based on just that: playing the cello! The more time put in, the more fruitful it shall be. How much time are you (realistically) able to practice?

-An instrument that is functioning correctly is crucial for success (regardless of price). Do you have this already, or is renting an option for you?

My experience with Elliot has been great! An honorable human! He takes a real world approach and identifies your strengths and how you can improve on your weaknesses. He is very experience with the technical aspects of playing the cello such as fingerings and bowing. He also seems to have a real emotional connection with the cello. I was in awe when I heard him demonstrate the instrument the first time. With his techniques - It really didn't take much time for me to grasp a handle on the instrument and play my first piece!
Elliot is very encouraging and always has great advice for any personal struggles with learning the cello. I remember my first lesson, I was really freaking out and felt like I couldn't do this. He gave me a pep talk and we took a little walk and came back. It was so much easier to think after that. he really takes the time and puts in the effort to make sure that you have a great experience learning the cello. I highly recommend him for anyone that has any interest in learning the cello!
