About Roshan

I am an internationally exhibiting artist who loves to teach. I've been painting for over four decades and teaching college-level art courses for over two. I will provide you with the necessary skills to help you fulfill your art interests and goals. All levels welcome. Private, semi-private and online classes. Whether you just want to relax, have a good time painting, or develop an ambitious portfolio, I can help. I have deep passion for art that I love sharing with others. Besides teaching and making art, I'm a lifelong learner. I've studied many different art forms including traditional arts of India and Nepal, and am so fortunate to have had excellent teachers from different schools all over the world. I have students who have been studying with me for many years and their homes are filled with their lovely art! My schedule is flexible and the studio is a very large, inspiring place to paint. My instruction is tailored to your needs.

I’ve been a practicing artist for about 4 decades, and an art educator for 3. My BA is from Bennington College and I have an MA and MFA from Rosary College Graduate School of Fine Arts, in Florence, Italy. For several years I studied drawing and painting privately with Julio Alpuy, from the Atelier of Joaquin Torres-Garcia, and more recently I've also studied traditional miniature painting and thangka painting and drawing in Nepal and India.

I currently teach online painting and drawing with SUNY and SNHU. I've also taught at the Art Institute of Pittsburgh, Penn State University, Community College of Allegheny County and Escola Massana in Barcelona, Spain. I've taught privately and at other art centers to people of all ages and levels for many years. My work is exhibited and collected internationally. I live in Andes, NY. About the lesson

For in-person drawing or painting classes we discuss the student's needs and interests, and create a tailored plan for each student, since classes are private or semi-private. All classes are self-paced.

The online drawing and painting classes are asynchronous, which means each week I send information about the assignments due with some resources to review. Students would have the week to complete the assignments and photograph their work and I provide feedback at the end of each week. We could also arrange to talk at a specific time, if preferred. Students are always welcome to send me emails during week with any questions or concerns. Along with weekly submissions, I ask for a written paragraph explaining the approach to the assignment, process, materials used, strengths and weaknesses. This is a valuable part of the learning process as it requires the student to be more aware and reflect on their process, and it helps me provide relevant feedback for suggestions for improvement.

In the first level of drawing classes, students will be learning how to draw from direct observation, not from photos, memory or imagination. We will also have some lessons on linear perspective. Since this is a private class, we can spend more or less time on certain topics, depending on needs and interests. We will also explore working with a range of materials.

The online painting classes are structured similarly to the drawing classes, however, instead of painting from direct observation, the assignments are geared towards learning how to use paint learning a range of techniques, and understanding tonal and color relationships. Assignments are open enough so students can complete the requirements while working in a broads range of style, based on their personal interests.
