About NORA

About the lesson

When working with a new student for the first time I would probably do the following:

1. Make our introductions and then get to know student's interests and talents.

2. Play a simple game(s) related to what content or subject the parents want improved and then list needs that I noticed as we played and communicated.

3. Begin to set goals for the child according to his/her needs.

4. Research learning activities and projects that will help the student to understand and internalize the skills that are lacking in a purposeful and relevant way.

I have worked with children from 2 yrs to 15 yrs of age throughout my teaching career.

Most were low income, bilingual students. All students both Spanish speaking or English were in need of experiences and enriched vocabulary.

I am very proud to see that my philosophy is working. Since I work with children at their developmental level, not all will show mastery or understanding during the time with me. But since I incorporated and integrated content areas with language arts, many go on to show mastery in the sciences and mathematics areas in their state assessments due to the exposure and hands-on experience they received in their earlier years.

One person who analyzed test results shared with me the in a previous school, every child that had me as a teacher had passed the 5th grade science state assessment.
