Several years ago, I was extremely fortunate to have discovered Tacoma- area artist and instructor, Tim Mansen. I had been painting off-and-on for 30 years and was ready for something other than hopping from one instructor’s teaching (and style) to another’s. Even though I was taught by some well-respected master artists, and I learned a lot about methodology and painting techniques, I was searching for more exact fundamentals of Classical Art instruction. As it turns out, Tim’s instruction was the answer. Fortunately for me, Tim made himself available for private lessons. His teaching of Classical art happened to be exceptional and was a most rewarding experience for me.
As a Classical Art instructor, Tim follows a sequential and logical art curriculum throughout the drawing and painting process. He is able to convey his academic knowledge with precision and in an understandable manner. He patiently helped me work through the core elements of skillbuilding: value (I now dream of value); hue; shape. His willingness to re-teach and his analytical critiques (yet sensitive) provide very necessary reinforcement and support. As a gifted artist himself, Tim is passionate about art and compassionate toward his students. He is a “guide on the side”---always there but not intimidating.
