About David

I seek to help students learn to see and appreciate the world around them. We all have a profound need to communicate what we observe. We want to tell visual stories. Whether those stories are realistic, surreal, abstract, or pure fantasy, we depend on our ability to translate what we see into two dimensions. This means we have to learn to draw.

I teach exercises that help us continually develop our seeing and drawing skills. I've taught beginners and professionals, children and adults. These are exercises we can keep using to help us master skills to whatever level we choose.

As a working professional artist, I can empathise with most every level of artistic development. Also, while I've been fortunate to have had some great teachers, I am largely self taught, which gives me insight into many common struggles and how to deal with them.

I feel comfortable teaching drawing and oil painting. I consider subject matter and style to be up to the individual student. My goal will be to teach methods of seeing and engaging all their senses in translating what they see into works of art.

I love painting, particularly portraits. I can think of nothing more satisfying than a client who feels I've magically captured a loved one. I love painting places and capturing the light and atmosphere I see.

I also love helping students learn to see and express themselves. I believe the best art comes from those who focus their efforts on learning to see, not with just the eyes, but with all the senses. In practice, this means exploring numerous techniques, learning different skills one at a time.

I use various texts and teaching methods to teach exercises designed to break down the many often confusing jumble of challenges the artist encounters in every painting. Specifically, I focus on:

1. seeing form through gesture, contour and modeling;

2. understanding how light and shadow relate to form;

3. learning to see and render perspective;

4. learning to see and calculate proportion, both with figure and with other objects;

5. learning to draw the human face and head;

6. learning to see and use color;

7. learning how to -- and how NOT to -- use photographs.

My goal is to help students learn how to master the various tools they need to overcome the challenges they encounter as they try to express themselves through art.

I have been a full time professional artist since 2003. Prior to that I took classes and workshops, and trained myself over the course of 20 years.

I have taught art to students of all levels and ages. My goal is to break the various processes down so that anyone can learn the skills necessary to master whatever style of visual art that inspires them.

My profession before I became a full time artist was as a trial lawyer. This work involved teaching of one sort or another almost every day. Most of my cases involved complex scientific or medical issues, which I had to master well enough to teach as preparation for resolving my cases.

About the lesson

We will visit to discuss expectations. Once we have an idea of what the student most needs to learn, we will arrive at a plan. Whether this is basic drawing, painting, landscape, portraiture, or any of a number of other goals, we can set up a series of lessons tailored to meet those goals.

Once we have a plan, we will work together on at least a weekly basis, in person or over the internet. Each week's class will be about a step towards our overall goal.
