About Spencer
I am very interested in the foundations of drawing, and very excited to teach them. That said, I am also specifically interested in unearthing a deeper interest from students that drawing can serve to a greater purpose.
I enjoy teaching students drawing because it enables them to communicate with an entirely different language. A lot of joy, knowledge and difficulty can be described through images.
I began teaching when I took an art education elective at Luther College. It provided me opportunities to volunteer teach in local classrooms and museums. I really liked the occupation from the start.
I have a BA degree in Fine Art, and I also have a K-12 Art Education degree. I'm currently a substitute teacher for the Minneapolis Public Schools district as I wait for an art classroom to become available to me.

I lay out the elements and principles of art to students, and I tell them that I would like to develop their understanding of them. It is also important for me to develop an understanding of a student's larger interests beyond art so we can use drawing to more purposeful ideation down the road.
I've worked with PK-12 students in the public schools. This includes students of many ethnicities, genders and intellectual abilities. I also have more informal experience teaching older adults.
Speak forwardly about your learning targets.
I was able to teach a group of fifth graders the importance of drawing with value in mind. We used a MacBook webcam to take distorted photographs of ourselves, and then drew from them.

Details
I am partly flexible, but I imagine a weekly one hour lesson for $50. This would include weekly homework assignments, and a midweek virtual check up if wanted.
