About Alexandra

I am extremely passionate, determined, and excited about the subjects I teach. My joy is contagious!

There is no greater joy than sharing. I want to instill my passion for learning and empower all my students.

I worked for years as an educator at a hair dye company, where I taught hair dye painting techniques across continents in three languages. This made me realize my passion for teaching and desire to teach language, the arts, and elementary level children.

I grew up in a household speaking Spanish, Italian, and English and have maintained my linguistic skills through self-motivated studying, as well as practicing with friends and family. I regularly read literature and listen to music in both languages. I am a practicing painter, with a Bachelor's degree from the New School. In my previous position as a substitute paraprofessional for the NYC DOE, I worked closely with an 11-year-old both with special needs for several months.

About the lesson

I gauge strengths and weaknesses by speaking to a new student about their long term goals in a subject, as well as their goals with me and what they hope to achieve after each session.

I have largely worked with adults (18+) both as a hair dye educator, and ESL instructor for Brazilian, Latino, and Italian students. I have worked with 10-11-year-olds with the NYC Department of Education.

If I were the student, I would ask the teacher for a mock lesson or ideas on how they would teach an idea I'm interested in/struggling with.

I covered a maternity leave position for a paraprofessional with a boy with special needs. Our first day together, he ran out of the classroom repeatedly, cursed at me, and refused to make eye contact or speak to me. I told him of our remaining time together, and he told me he is happy his regular paraprofessional is coming back but will miss working with me and hopes we cross paths again.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about how much time they are able to dedicate to their area of study outside of tutoring time. A tutor is a guide, but the student truly learns when they process the information in the lesson, and apply it to personal studying time throughout the week.
