About Anissa

I love helping students! If you work with me, we will focus on growth mindset (a positive look on life) to help you enhance your skills as a writer. I have been working as a tutor for about 3 years at Delta College in the Writing Success Center as well as in some tutor embedded English classes. One of the things I like to focus on when helping my students is their learning style. I always try to customize each experience for the individual by adapting to each of his or her own needs. I am both a tutor and a student, so I know how challenging work can be. I want to ensure to my students that even if a low grade is received, success and improvement can still be possible.

I have four Associates Degrees, and am currently working towards a Bachelor's Degree as well as a Minor in Creative Writing. As a tutor I have been given the opportunity to lead class discussions, make and present my own lectures with approval from an English Professor and Instructional Support Assistant, and I was invited to attend the 2nd Annual Statewide CAP Conference as a presenter advocating student success in classes with embedded tutors.

The very first thing I like to do is get to know my student. While my goal is to improve the student's skills, it is just as important to me to get to know my students so that way I can provide them with customized examples that will be more relevent to them. It also makes it more enjoyable to have a good relationship with my students on both of our ends.

Everyone! I have worked with students from many age groups from 5th grade to college level. In college I get many students from different backgrounds including recent high school graduates, returning and non-traditional students, and even fellow tutors who have worked with me in the past.

Experiment with a variety of tutors who fit best with your needs. Just because a person seems very highly qualified, they may not mesh with you. If this happens, understand that this is normal and that the person's teaching style just didn't match up with you. There is nothing wrong with you as an individual.

Learning is a process and takes time. Everyone makes mistakes, even your tutors, teachers, and professors. Accepting that failure is a necessary part of success is key to positive learning.

I am always fond of the memories and positive relationships I have with my students. When a student tells me they have done well, my day is made. Even just seeing that lightbulb above their head brings me joy. My most recent proud moment is having one of my students, who was aiming for a B in his English class receive an A in his class instead.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
What is my learning style? (What is it that I need to learn or to stay focused?)

What is my biggest educational fear? Why do I have this fear?

What can/will I do to help motivate myself to push through even if I fail?

What are some of my goals that I can achieve by having a tutor help me? (long term or short term)
