First of all, I devote the first lesson to identifying their needs/interests and determining their level of English by using a set of questions that I have created.  If the student needs writing help, I ask them to submit a sample of their writing. The first lesson is also about developing rapport with the student.

Then, I use my library and online resources to create a curriculum tailored to that student's needs.

I have worked with all ages of students, from 4 to 60 years of age. My students have come from every inhabited continent and have had a wide variety of goals, from basic speaking and cultural competence to test preparation and university students.

The student should seek a teacher who is demanding, yet flexible and approachable. The teacher should challenge the student, but at the same time be aware that the student may struggle.  If the student does struggle, the teacher should make adjustments to ensure that the student does not become discouraged or frustrated. Do not underestimate the value of teacher approachability. The teacher must be available for whatever help the student needs.

I had a student whose goal it was to enter university in the United States.  She needed to prove that her English level was adequate for university study.  However, she told me that she had not completed high school in her country because of her subpar math skills.

I worked on both English and mathematics, and she passed the TOEFL exam as well as the mathematics portion of the GED test, which enabled her to attend university.

At her graduation ceremony, she broke down in tears and thanked me personally for helping her reach her goal.  I will never forget that.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Am I willing to trust the teacher to guide me to reaching my goals?

2. Are my goals realistic, given my time frame for achieving them?

3. Am I willing to inform the teacher if I find the material too easy or difficult?

4. Am I willing to put forth the effort necessary to reach my goals?
