About Maddie

For over a decade I have had a great passion for all things that have to do with American and European history. I've been tutoring for almost three years in this subject and have loved every minute of it! I also tutor in English, particularly when it comes to reading or essay writing skills in any grade level. In the past, I have also tutored in areas of the performing arts, such as theatre and singing. In addition to having an associate degree in history, I was the president of the History Club at Montgomery College Rockville and made the Dean's List consecutively while studying there. I was awarded the Ruth B. Dinbergs and Jean M. Furgol Award in History and spoke to local and state representatives on behalf of the college to advocate the needs of its students. I was also chosen to submit an essay and presentation to the UN in my English course. With some background in the theatre arts, I try to incorporate some of those skills in my lessons to make learning fun and upbeat for my students. When I am not tutoring, I am currently working on getting my bachelor's degree in history. I also enjoy reading, watching movies, and figure skating.

I started tutoring in high school while also working as a babysitter. I also developed teaching skills through coaching figure skating, as well as teaching kids how to sing and speak French (which is my second language). I have always been drawn to the concept of sharing my passions with people of all ages, especially kids.

I have an associate degree in history and currently working on my bachelor's. I was the president of my college's history club where I organized events and gave presentations on various topics. In the past, I have tutored in History, English, Singing, and French. For several years I worked with children ages 5 to 12 as a babysitter part-time as well.

About the lesson

My first session will always be centered on getting to know my student, discovering how much they already know about the subject, and finding out what they hope to achieve from our sessions together. I will take into account any accommodations and establish both short-term and long-term goals. I will always prioritize upcoming homework assignments and projects to make sure things get done on time.

I've worked with kids of all ages, as young as 5 years old in various subjects. I have also tutored high school and college-level students.

With any subject, tutoring requires effort from both the tutor and the student. My area of expertise does not rely on memorizing formulas and solving equations. Instead, we will focus more on discussing the who, what, when, where, why, and how of any historical event or literary piece. Therefore, I strongly encourage note-taking both inside the classroom and during tutoring sessions. Most importantly, look for a tutor that wants to see you achieve your goals while also catering to your needs. A good tutor wants to see you succeed!

At the start of the 2021 school year, I had a parent request that I tutor her 16-year-old daughter in French and History. The previous year she detested the subject and only took the class to meet a requirement for high school graduation with barely passing grades. However, by the end of the second marking period, she had bounced back with A's and B's and even started developing a passion for French history and culture. I felt very honored to have helped her achieve her goals.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about what they want to achieve out of their tutoring sessions while also taking into account limits or accommodations. Do you prefer listening to lectures or reading passages from textbooks? Do you find it easier to remember things using flashcards or study guides? How familiar are you with the subject matter? Is there any topic you do not feel comfortable discussing (ie wars, religious history)? By the end of the quarter/semester, what do you hope to achieve or learn? These are just some things you might want to ponder and address with your teacher/tutor.
