About Gracen

I love working with students of all ages to empower them to succeed and love learning. I'm a current Junior at the University of Michigan studying to get my bachelor's in Secondary Education with a focus in English and Physics. I've worked in classroom settings as a student teacher, and have worked as a tutor individually for high school and elementary school students.

I began teaching because I loved to write fiction stories, and love to read science fiction and classic literature. I worked several jobs in a teaching capacity, and found so much joy in helping others feel confident in their abilities and enjoy learning. As a student, I loved literature and writing but hated English class, and this experience has taught me that I can relate to students who don't necessarily love English, I can bring a new perspective to teaching, and I can create a positive environment in my classroom for my students.

I am a fourth year college student studying to get my bachelor's in Secondary Education with certifications in English and Physics. I've worked extensively with tutoring organizations like America Reads and tech education non-profits like iT2Pi to tutor and educate students around the United States.

About the lesson

For English tutoring, I like to first look at the syllabus for the class and get an idea of the teacher's expectations. Then, I assess the student's individual needs in that class. This may be grammer, stylistics, essay structuring, or idea organization. For younger students, this might be phonological awareness, spelling, or reading fluency.

For Physics tutoring, information about the class and syllabus is essential to understand the course pacing and expectations. Then, I help the student identify which specific units or concepts are troublesome, and help clarify misconceptions and foster in-depth understanding through applied examples.

I have worked with students from Kindergarten through fourth grade, as well as 10th through 12th grade. I've enjoyed the experience at every age level, and have gathered resources and knowledge about working with different students along the way.
