About Shelby
Hello!! My name is Shelby Thornton and I have been a 4th and 5th grade reading teacher for 5 years now! I enjoy teaching students reading and writing strategies to simplify a subject, that unfortunately, many have grown to dislike.
Some students need a little extra help outside of their usual learning experience (traditional school, homeschool, online school). I am here to give extra guidance before a big test, or when a concept hasn't been mastered quite yet.
I am a certified teacher in the state of Arkansas and I have my BSE in Middle Level Education specializing in Language Arts and Social Studies from the University of Central Arkansas.
I tutored young students in high school and decided I wanted to become a teacher. I went to the University of Central Arkansas and graduated in 2018. I quickly became a teacher right after graduating.
I have my bachelors in Middle Level Education/Literacy and Social Studies and have been teaching at this level for 5 years. I am certified to teach in Arkansas.

I will start by meeting my student to find out their interests and feelings about school. After that I will give a pre-assessment to find out my students needs.
Once I know my student's levels and interests, I will plan curriculum to help each student succeed. I will also allow students to bring work/study materials to our tutoring sessions that we can work through together.
I have taught 4th and 5th graders, but have interned in a 6th grade and 7th grade classroom. I coached high school soccer as well. I have taught all lovely minds from GT students, to ELL students, to SPED students.
