About EJ

No matter what career path you are taking, being able to write and communicate effectively will always among the top requirements. Working with people is also an important skill, which is part of why I enjoy tutoring! Come study and learn with me, and we'll work as a team to reach your writing goals.

I have a Bachelor's Degree in Cinematic Arts from the University of Iowa, where I graduated in the top 5% with my 3.82 GPA. I was also part of the Honors Program, listed on the Dean's List, and was granted a membership in Phi Beta Kappa. During my studies, I spent a year in France to engage in French language and culture, which led to receiving a minor in French.

I am passionate about storytelling in all of its forms: films, essays, novels, screenplays, and all others. I grew up in a literary household, as my mom and sister are both librarians, and my dad is a writer and editor. I took a slightly different path by studying filmmaking in college, but I am still so fond of the written word. In fact, most of that college education consisted of writing essay examinations of the compositions of specific scenes in films, rather than picking up the camera -- so I feel prepared to help you with your essays, too!

I look forward to working with you!

I am a social person and I've always enjoyed helping people! Writing essays is a skill that is essential to many educational paths, and I found myself often editing and proofreading essays during college. Now that I am graduated, I am glad to still offer my assistance to those who can benefit from it. Few things are more satisfying than making a plan, working hard, and seeing the wonderful results.

The first thing that a new student and I will do is to get to know a little bit about each other. It's important when writing to keep the voice of the writer in tact, and not let it get hidden through editing or MLA format. Once I have a sense for who this student is, we will set some straightforward goals to work on. These goals could be large, such as finishing the semester with an 'A' in the class, or they could be smaller, such as simply making sure the students's grammar is correct in an essay. Next, we'll function as a team to make these goals happen.

In the past, I have worked with my own peer group. I often worked on editing essays for other students at my college, but I look forward to working with other ages now that I have graduated.

Just like a friend, boss, or therapist, tutoring works best when a student and a teacher get along well. Consider how your tutor writes and speaks, and take a look at their photos. Does this tutor look like someone you will be able to communicate with effectively? Of course, we can't judge books by their covers, but a first impression can at least assist in helping put you on a path for success.

The next step is to reach out to this tutor. You can always have one session to see if you understand each other well. There is no shame in needing to find another tutor if one doesn't mesh well with you.

As winter is coming to a close and spring bulbs are starting to show their buds in the flowerbeds, I have been spending as much time outside as possible. My husband and I have a large vegetable garden that we devote much of our time and love towards. This year, it's larger than before, and we have introduced new metal arbors to train vining vegetables to climb on. I am so excited to see them grow! This fall, we will be able to walk under the arbors and pick squash like it's coming from a tree, which is utterly magical.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should come to me with some idea of their goal for our tutoring sessions. In other words, why do you want tutoring? What do you intend to have happen by the end? Perhaps a student is looking for a simple proofread of an article that they wrote, or maybe they are hoping to get a great grade in a class by the end of the semester. If you aren't positive about your goals, just come with a few vague notions, and we'll find some more answers together.
