About Austin

Austin is currently an honors highschool student with an above 4-point GPA. He has taken honors English classes since middle school and scored an A- and above in all these courses.

Austin also has years of experience working with younger children and managing people through his experience with directing theatre shows and running school clubs. He has tutored classmates for years for free.

I've always loved tutoring, even at an age as young as ten years old. Students would always come to me for help as I happened to be one of the more school-oriented kids in my classes. What made them come to me, though, is that I would always be willing to help and make it make sense to them.

Our school system is broken. It works for the classroom rather than the individual student. Tutors help patch up that problem by working with individual students and giving them the care and attention they need. I want to be a part of that patch.

I've always had an affinity for helping people. Whether it be through making them laugh, helping them through difficult times, or tutoring them through their schoolwork. Therefore, tutoring is a skill I've been building for some time. Only recently, though, have I realized that it has become a passion of mine.

I have tutored many students in both the English and Science fields since I've been in middle school. So much so, teachers have assigned students (whose first language is not English) to work with me in order to help them improve in the class.

About the lesson

The first thing I do in any session with a new student is to build a personal relationship with them. Students will be much less likely to get frustrated and will be much more likely to work well with the teacher and to try processes and techniques that may be unfamiliar to them.

Something I'll always try to figure out right off the bat is the type of learner a student is. Different students work better with different reading and writing techniques. Figuring that out as quick as possible is beneficial to both myself and the student so I can adequately plan lessons, demonstrations, discussions, and the like.

From there, it all depends on the student. One of the unfortunate things about the current school system is that it works for the class and not the individual students. Classrooms and curriculums are very rigid and structured. That is not the case here. I will always work for the needs of the student rather than following a set of pre-made instructions.

I've worked with students from those who just need someone to help them organize their thoughts, to people who have real diagnosed reading-related disabilities. I'm willing to work with any type of student regardless of their relationship with English courses.

Look for someone who has worked with many types of students and who can apply different teaching processes to meet your needs. The reason most students need tutoring is because the school system doesn't educate them in the way they need to be educated.

A student I am most proud of working with has dyslexia. She is a classmate of mine (in honors English) but really struggles to read. Sitting down with her for an hour or so a day and working through the books and clarifying anything she didn't understand was really beneficial for her. She now claims that by working with me she was able to pass sophomore English.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
The component any student should be thinking of is what type of learner they are. Some students learn best through lectures, guided reading, post-reading discussion, and the like. If you already know what works for you, it is very important that you let your teacher know. However, most teachers should be willing to work with you to figure out what works the best.
