About Sahare

Hi there! How is school going? Stressful, daunting, intimidating? I feel you!

Learning is not easy. But with the right mentors and teachers around you, I know you will find joy and achievement in your learning.

With my experience in education, nonprofit, medicine, and clinical research, I bring a holistic approach to education. Most importantly, in my personal schooling, I suffered from many health and learning disabilities, which has strengthened me with a skill to teach each student in the way that works best for them.

The purpose of knowledge is not to get through school and again, to get through the next school. (Well, it is in our society). However, I envision a world where we create an environment where students drive their learning topics, where they are motivated to study subjects in depth, detail, and variety, and where all students' learning methods are honored.

You! I love meeting new people, especially young minds who are inquisitive about the world around them.

Learning is a form of creative expression, and as I teach, I hope to learn just as much, if not more from you.

I started teaching as early as I can remember that I started learning. Teaching has been and continues to be the best way for me to learn a topic.

1. Completed high school at Parish Episcopal School, in which I completed 7 AP courses, and tested so that I did not have to take these courses in college.

2. Bachelors of Science and Arts in Neuroscience with a Certificate in Social Inequality, Health, and Policy from the University of Texas at Austin.

- Chemistry 301: Mentored and tutored students in chemistry classes using flipped classroom model

- Sociology certificate required the completion of a Bachelor's level thesis. My thesis was on Mental Illness in Federally Qualified Health Centers of Texas.

3. Masters of Biomedical Sciences from Tufts Medical School.

- Completed Master's level thesis on the Epigenetic Basis of Trauma

- Representative for Multicultural Fellows Council

4. March 2016- May 2018: 2nd Grade teacher and mentor

- Taught thirty 2nd grade students from South Asia, East Africa and Syria living in D.C. about community building, history, and identiy formation as Muslim Americans, using art, theatre, and medidation practices; Held parent teacher conferences, wrote recommendation letters, and helped families address learning disabilities

5. Pediatric Clinical Researcher

- Helped coordinate clinical trials and ensure the rights of children and their families

About the lesson

1. Ask them how they are doing! Most times students aren't even given a chance to take a breath and catch up with their day before they jump into tutoring. I find that this 30 second check in actually focusses the both of us to get into the work.

2. Ask them what they care about, and taking the process from there. My process is organized on the scientific theory of emotional investment of learning, in which a student's heart and mind guide their interest, which affects how much they learn.

3. Ask them what works for them in tutoring/what doesn't. Depending on how old the student is, they will be able to give concrete feedback from tutors that have helped and those who have not. It is important that we do not recreate traumatic teaching cycles.

4. Depending on if the student is working towards a grade, or just learning a topic outside of school, the process will differ. For the first, we will need to see what the teacher is expecting of the student (curriculum) and go from there, while also learning what we can along the way. For the second, we will use a more flexible and self-guided approach.

5. Complete the session with feedback to track our progress, and hopefully a laugh!

I have worked with students from the ages of 2nd grade and up, all the way up to our beloved senior citizens, who I used to help teach English to. As a child of an immigrant, I grew up in a very diverse community, and was immersed in a diverse learning and teaching environment, filled with all types of people with different learning styles. Some of us need to write something out in order for us to remember it, some of us need to teach it to others. Others need to draw a picture, while others might want to participate in a friendly competition with another student to help them challenge their brain.

Students, like human beings, are as alike as we are different. Our learning works this way, too.

I would say — what lights a fire within you? What makes you excited to learn about, to teach about?

Once you meet a teacher, see if they go beyond teaching you curriculum (which is of course important, we all need to pass and do well)! See if they urge you to develop your OWN reading questions, and your OWN way of understanding the material.

Most of all, do you enjoy their presence? Notice how you feel around them — comfortable, excited to learn, motivated?

I was teaching second grade. I will call my student, "S."

S always hid behind his chunky black frames, bowl-shaped hair cut, and checkered button down shirts. When I first met him, he would not speak up, read during popcorn reads, play with the other students, and would frequently "get distracted" and want to move away from our topic at hand.

His parents, doing the best any parents can do, just thought he was too dependent. It was as if everyone treated him like a small child, and that reinforced the distance he created between him and the classroom.

I began and ended each class with group affirmations. Throughout the course of the year, oftentimes, I would hear him in response to someone else's mean comment, "Hey, that's not fair. I am smart! I am kind!"

Forgetting how easily 2nd graders absorb information, I was reminded in that moment, of the privilege I have to be a part of another human being's experience with learning.

Of course, like any cliche story, by the end of the year, we all noticed improvements in his social interactions and self-treatment.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1. Have you written your needs down, or talked to a parent or loved one about them?

2. What made you identify that need? Was there a particular moment when a lightbulb went off, and you thought, I think I need this in order for me to learn better.

3. Have you checked in with your emotions, thoughts, and feelings? All of these are important to process when it comes to needs, not just the things that "sound" right when you talk to a parent or counselor.
