About Robin
I began teaching when I was in elementary school and used all my old workbooks to 'teach' the younger children on my block. :) I went on to work at KinderCare through high school and college, and was a camp counselor during the summers. I have always loved making a difference in the lives of children -- especially when it comes to teaching a child how to read. I received my bachelor's degree with dual certifications in Elementary and Special Education, then went on to earn my master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction. I am an educator to my core...and even after almost three decades in this profession, I am still seeking every opportunity to join professional organizations and communities to continue learning how to best serve my students. It is an honor to be able to teach a child, and I hold myself to the highest standard with my instruction.
I have been an educator for over twenty-seven years (and counting) serving as an elementary classroom teacher, special education teacher, reading specialist, instructional coach, READ Act Coordinator, and Literacy Director. I have a master's degree in Curriculum and Instruction and am a trained Orton-Gillingham practitioner.
I have loads of experience teaching whole group, small groups, and 1:1 using a variety of techniques and programs. The Orton-Gillingham approach is my absolute favorite due to the powerful impact it has on all learners. I enjoy finding ways to add in fun movement breaks throughout the lesson to adjust to the wiggles and shorter attention spans the littles have. Designing engaging, excellent lessons to meet the unique needs of every single student is what drives and motivates me!

When I begin working with a new student, the first several sessions are all about getting to know each other through games, mixing in a few informal assessments to gather data for instructional purposes, and fun ways to learn how to use the annotation tools needed for our lessons. Once procedures and expectations are established, we're off to the races and our lessons begin!
Over the years, I have worked with elementary neurotypical and neurodivergent students in neighborhood schools, charter schools, and through online tutoring. Majority of my time has been dedicated to neurodivergent students requiring multiple pathways of learning. I believe social-emotional development is just as important as academic development and treat them equally when designing lessons. I view the whole child when it comes to being intential about my lesson planning and goal-setting for my students.
My advice hiring a teacher in my area of expertise would be to seek out an experienced educator with specific training in the area of reading instruction. Teaching reading *is* rocket science and requires a wealth of knowledge and experience to know exactly how to pivot minute by minute during a lesson to provide corrective feedback and utilize a mulitsensory approach in an effecient yet effective way. Students who have a difficult time learning how to read in a traditional classroom setting or through typical curriculum pacing need a tutor who provides a structured, systematic, and diagnostic approach -- backed by expertise. There's no time to waste when it comes to teaching a child to read. It's an urgent matter and should be addressed by someone trained and highly qualified.
The most recent event I am fond of was teaching a student while she was on a family vacation for several weeks. I was traveling, too, and we were able to have seamless lessons and share our travels with each other at the same time. I thoroughly enjoyed hearing about her vacation highlights/seeing souvenirs when we met on Zoom for lessons, and she thought it was super cool to be in different time zones that were hours apart, yet we felt like we were sitting together in the same room! Online lessons are awesome in so many ways. This is a prime example. Our sessions were not interuppted no matter where we were... and we had fun learning new areas and cultures with each other along the way. Score!!
