About Monserrat

My name is Monse and I am a credentialed Kindergarten teacher looking to start building a client base for tutoring. I have a B.A. in Creating Educational Equity, M.A. in Learning and Teaching, and have just completed San Francisco Unified School District's induction program to clear my Multiple Subject Teaching Credential. I am currently transitioning from teaching English only Kindergarten to 4th/5th grade Spanish Immersion due to the fact that I look forward to using more of my skills as I serve the community. I have a passion for creating equitable learning environments for students by using their interests and backgrounds. As an educator I consider myself an energetic and warm demander. I hold high expectations of all students and aim to meet their needs. I am patient and have experience working with students K-8. I also have experience collaborating on multiple committees at my school site aimed at creating a more equitable environment for all students through the creation of an ethnic studies curriculum, working with families and community allies, and building positive sustainable behavior management incentives.

(concealed information)

I have always enjoyed working with others and like to do things that I feel have a tangible impact. I also have high expectations of myself and I feel that in education I must always work to improve my craft and my being.

I was part of a program at the University of Redlands that allowed me to create my own degree by working with several advisors to take courses that specifically taught me to create an equitable classroom environment. Although this meant that I often took more than the average number of units, I was able to study several languages, history from differing perspectives, and start my Masters degree in addition to completing my university's general education requirements. After earning my B.A. in Creating Educational Equity, I completed the coursework for an M.A. in Learning and Teaching in addition to Student Teaching so I may also earn my Multiple Subject Teaching Credentials. I have worked for a school district for a few years now so I have also completed the work necessary to clear that credential.

Building a trusting, working relationship is the most important tool in working with a student. I like to get to know the student first. I try to be open and professional so that students see that I am there to support them. I share bits about myself and do my best to answer all questions apporpriately. It is also important that I know what methods of learning work best for the student (visual, auditory, kinesthetic, etc.) and what challenges they may be working on overcoming.

I have worked with students in grades K-8 both as a teacher and program director. In college, I tutored foster kids in a group home setting and volunteered 100 hours at an elementary school as a requirement for enrollment in the School of Education. I have worked as a program director for summer camps in Berkeley, CA (students ages 3-8) and in San Francisco (students ages 8-12). As a classroom teacher, I have taught First grade, Kindergarten, and look forward to teaching 4th/5th grade Spanish Immersion in the fall. I have worked for a a school in a more rural setting but have spent most of my time working with students in major cities, predominantly in communities considered to be in the lower socioeconomic bracket.

I advise students to hire a teacher with who they are comfortable asking questions or disagreeing. It is important that students feel autonomous and supported when working with an educator.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Students should think about how learning has changed for them since the begining of school closures. What has worked and what challenges can I help problem-solve around?
