Before looking at the flute, I like to get the students to talk about themselves: where they go to school, their family, hobbies, what they like in school, what interested them in the flute. Then we open the flute case and look at each section of the flute separately. First we take out the head joint and I show them how to get a sound by blowing across the mouthpiece. This includes illustrating how to use the tongue against the roof of the mouth and behind the teeth to get a "too" or "tuh" sound. For the first week of practice I stress using just the head joint and "tooting" in rhythm to the phrase, "I love the flute. I love the flute. I love the flute,” and repeating over and over. This may be enough for the first week.
The next step is putting all three sections of the flute together and learning the hand positions. I use pictures, graphics and videos to illustrate. This enlivens the process and the student gets exposure to different people playing the flute.
If the student is comfortable getting a sound with the flute assembled, I will have him or her finger the notes F, G, A and B one note at a time. Whatever note is easiest for them at first I will concentrate on, using the “I love the flute” pattern again, and move to each of the these four notes using that pattern. If this goes well, I will then show them how to play "Mary Had A Little Lamb" without music. If this is too difficult, I encourage them to play random notes and make up patterns or melodies on their own during practice.
It’s important that some fun is involved because dexterity on any instrument can be a challenge always. When they get comfortable using their ear and playing these simple ideas away from music, I will introduce reading music notation: the treble clef, the staff and note placement on the staff, but I also encourage always working away from music, starting at the beginning stage, as part of each lesson for many reasons including using the memory.
