About Beth

Are you new to playing the flute? Or, have you been playing for a while, and you want to improve? Do you need to work on music for band or orchestra? I can help in all of these areas. I was in both band and orchestra from middle school on up, marching band included. I am a teacher by profession. I have been a teacher for decades, teaching flute and then becoming an English professor. I have been a teacher for nearly all of my life.

I have been playing flute for over 30 years, since I was 10 years old. I was very fortunate to have as my teacher the protégée of the principal flute of the Pittsburgh Symphony, Bernard Goldberg. My teacher taught me everything that she herself was learning from Goldberg. Goldberg himself was a student of renowned flautist George Barrere – which I suppose makes me a musical great grand-daughter of Barrere!

We will work on having excellent tone, strong embouchure, and correct breathing and posture, as well as music fundamentals, phrasing and interpretation, and of course, good technique. As a classically trained flautist, I always try to sneak in some music history and classical music, but I am flexible and enjoy helping students work on whatever genre of music they prefer.

I love students, no matter what their age. As a teacher, I know that students (not only children, but all of us!) learn best when learning is fun and when it is personally meaningful to them. So, I try to include music that each student can connect with and find enjoyable, and I try to teach with a sense of humor, joy, warmth, and encouragement. It is my goal to teach not only how to play the flute—a beautiful and versatile instrument—but also to help all my students learn to love music and to be proud to be a musician.

Levels: Beginner, Intermediate

Ages: 9 – 90, special needs students

When I was in college, one of my professors told me, "You need to be a teacher." I had never thought of myself as a teacher. But I had benefited from excellent teachers, my flute teacher being first and foremost among my fine teachers. She took me, a shy young flute player, and taught me well, building my skill as well as my confidence and self-esteem. Finally, she insisted that I try out for the American Youth Symphony. To my surprise, I made it. We travelled all over Europe for a summer, playing in various venues. Teaching is more than simply skill (although it is that, too). Good teaching involves building a relationship.

I have played flute for over 30 years and have studied flute with professionals for about 12 years. I am also a professional teacher. I have taught flute, and I was an English teacher for most of my career. (Part of that was to help new teachers learn how to teach!).

About the lesson

Our first lesson is a trial lesson, where we get to know each other and decide if we are right for each other. We will talk about your previous experience with flute and music. I am very interested to get to know you, and for you to know me. The best learning happens when you trust and like your teacher. So getting to know one another will be an important part of our first (trial) lesson.

If you are already using a book, I will listen to you play and give you some feedback. I always have my flute with me to demonstrate what I am saying. If you don't know how to read music, that's ok. That will become part of our lessons.

From there, we will set our lesson times.

I taught students years ago, and I am getting started once again. I can work with children from age 8 or 9 on up, to age 90+. I am the mom of a special needs child and feel comfortable working with children or young people with learning challenges. I can work with beginners through intermediate level.

There are many flute players who are excellent performers and musicians. However, that does not mean that they will make a great teacher. Find a flute teacher who is both. Find one who has some training (not simply experience) in teaching itself. Find one you can trust and who will be personally invested in YOU.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
1) How committed am I to learning to play this instrument? Am I willing to practice most days of the week, even for just a short period?

2) (Beginners): Can I be patient and persistent to stay with this long enough to get through that first, often frustrating period where I may struggle simply to get a decent sound? The breakthrough will come!

3) Am I able to focus long enough to attend to a piece of music, even just a short piece?
