About Gina
I am a positive teacher with several years of experience teaching, performing, judging, and being involved with the musical arts on all levels.
I love helping all of my students improve. I did not always have teachers who could give me something to help me figure out how to express myself through my instrument, and it was frustrating to have to figure things out on my own. I got into some bad habits until I had some wonderful teachers who helped me. I like to pass on that information to help others enjoy music as I do!
I started teaching privately when I was first in college. I also teach classes at the university level as well as private students of all ages and levels.
I have a BM in music performance from Wichita State University, an MM and a DMA from The University of Michigan in flute performance.

I evaluate where the student is in their process of learning the instrument and reading music. Then, we try and work together to fill in anything that is lacking in their knowledge. And we try and have fun doing it - mistakes help you learn, and we all need to learn to laugh at some of them!
Some of my students have gone on to be music teachers themselves. Some of my students just want to improve and be able to do well in their band programs. And some of my students are returning to flute after not playing for years. I try and help all of my students meet their own personal goals for playing the flute!
Make sure you choose a teacher who can work with you to build up your skills and your confidence in those skills. Studying an instrument is fun work, but can be very frustrating. Praciticing is involved, but you need to understand how to practice so you can feel succesful in your lesson too. A good teacher will be able to recognize what it is you are doing incorrectly in your practicing & should help you correct that problem.
I love to see & hear a really good performance, and recently I had the pleasure of being able to hear a wonderful recital in San Diego. The recital involved the entire flute section of the Los Angeles Philharmonic flute section. They played a quartet together and they each individually played pieces either alone or with piano accompaniment. It was very inspriing: great playing, wonderful compositions were represented, and the audience enjoyed the energy and performance.
A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Give the teacher as much information about your musical studies as possible. What may seem like a small fact that you leave out, may be a big piece of information that could help a teacher help you better! Be honest - if you had a bad experience with another teacher, don't be afraid to say what happened and why you quit. (You don't have to name names!)
