About Sophia

I am pursuing a Bachelor of Music in Horn Performance at the University of Southern California (USC) and have experience playing in many orchestras and chamber groups. I have taught a kindergarten music class, music lessons, and worked as a camp counselor in two arts/music camps (including Interlochen). I also run an educational music YouTube channel called The Free Range Musician. I aspire to play horn in a symphony orchestra someday.

I believe that music is an important aspect of educational development. It encourages not only creativity, but also critical-thinking and motor skills. I love interacting with young artists and helping them grow as musicians. Every time I teach a student, I learn from them in return.

About the lesson

Every step of this process will be tailored to a student's age and level of experience on the horn:

1. Introduction: I will first assess their needs and gaps in their music education through basic exercises and pieces in the first 1-2 lessons.

2. Fundamentals: I will provide exercises, études, and simple solo works to work on in every lesson, as well as assignments for the student to practice in preparation for each lesson. We will work through the music with patience and break down the music to develop the fundamentals.

3. Repertoire exploration: Once proper fundamentals have improved, we will begin exploring traditional horn repertoire and continue developing skills on the horn, as well as attaining a more thorough understanding of music theory and history. The student will be able to play pieces that they are excited about!

4. Performance preparation: We will choose short works for horn or solo pieces to focus on and begin preparing in depth. This can be working toward a mini-recital for family and friends, a recording that we make together, an audition, or a solo performance. It will be fun for the student to apply what they have learned and share it with others!
