About Greg
I know the sounds and I know how to teach them.
In teaching regular ESL, the progress is so slow that it can be discouraging.
In teaching pronunciation, I see real progress right away; it's very gratifying.
My degree is in Applied Linguistics so teaching pronunciation of sounds is a good fit for me.
My initial teaching experience was for a community college district. At that time, I took some freelance jobs and did some one-on-one tutoring.
After some time doing linguistic field work in Africa, I returned to teaching ESL.
I hold a Bachelor's Degree in Philosophy (Seattle Pacific University, 1990) and a Master's Degree in Applied Linguistics (University of Texas at Arlington, 1995). After finishing graduate school, I worked for two years teaching English for the Dallas County Community College system. Then I spent 13 months in Portugal learning my own second language. After working for six years as a field linguist in Mozambique, Africa, I returned to teaching, amassing another eight years of ESL experience teaching English to students of all levels from all over the world. My teaching has brought me to The United States, Egypt, Taiwan, Thailand, Japan, and Afghanistan. I am trained to prepare students for oral examinations. I am skilled at teaching American English pronunciation.

With a quick 15 minute consultation, I can identify your pronunciation needs and set a program to satisfy them. This consultation includes oral proficiency testing to pinpoint your level and your needs. Then, if you decide to continue with me, I will send you my contact data and a link to your own personal 'virtual' whiteboard, pre-populated with the sound charts that we will be using in our classes.
I have taught English to students of all levels, from pre-literate to advanced. My students have come from every part of the world. Their needs have been as varied as the first languages from which they started--every student is different.

I was very proud of the work I did in Japan training students to take the Oral Proficiency Interview. Within a month, I raised one student's score from a 2, 2 to a 2+, 2+. He was the first from his department to reach that score.
Recently, I taught at the Afghan Air Force Academy in Kabul, Afghanistan. It was very rewarding to train and mentor the future leaders of their country.
At present, I am enjoying the satisfaction that comes with helping my Thumbtack students improve their English pronunciation and reduce their accent.

Greg is a great, flexible and well organized teacher. He uses whiteboard or Extempore tools which makes the class agreeable and easy to follow. Living in the US since almost 7 years, I never really made any progress on this subject. However, already after a few classes with Greg, I can feel and hear some improvements on my accent, and I am also able to pronounce sounds which were quite obscur to me.
His tutoring works very much! I have some troubles about pronunciation. He pointed my incorrect pronunciations and advice me how to fix those practically. Thanks to his advise, I have a confidence to talk in English now.

Value: I work hard to prepare for you outside of meeting times so that we can make the most of our sessions together. I'll also correct your homework outside of class at no charge. Your 15 minute introduction to me and my methods is free.
Price is $30 per 50-55 minute session.
