About Zainab

Teaching has always been my passion, and I've spent five years working on my skills so that I can help educate and enrich youth. I enjoy helping students understand material rather than just completing it as an assignment, so that they keep what they learn in a way that makes sense to them.

I've been volunteering with various educational groups since 2017, when I first started working with the education department at the WNC Nature Center. I was a peer tutor in high school and community college, working with my fellow students in English and math, and I helped teach the same subjects to first grade students for a year. English is my first language, and I have advanced fluency in Arabic and intermediate fluency in Japanese and Latin.

Teaching and education has always been my passion! I first started peer tutoring on my own, helping fellow students with proofreading essays and completing math homework; over time, I gained experience and was able to branch out into drafting, studying, and comprehension.

I've been peer tutoring for five years and volunteering with education departments for three. I completed my high school's teacher education program; in this program, I spent half a semester learning about child development and teaching plans, and over a full semester as an assistant in a first-grade classroom teaching English and math.

About the lesson

I always start with getting to know what my student likes and dislikes about the subject I'm helping them work on. This information helps me understand my student in relation to the subject. Knowing what's easy and what's hard for my student is equally important, so that I know what skills I can help them develop moving forward.

I've taught English and math to students ranging from six to forty years old, in specific subjects (reading/drafting, basic math/algebra) suiting their ages. I've also taught environmental education presentations to visitors as young as three and as old as eighty. I've worked with students from many different cultural backgrounds, and have worked with students who speak English as a second language.

Think about how you want to learn just as much as what you want to learn! Some teachers are good at outlining things directly, and others are better at being a helping hand at having you put it together yourself.

I was very luckily able to spend a month in Japan, and experience the New Year there. One of my favorite parts of the trip was visiting an owl cafe--I was able to meet and interact with a lot of different owls!
