About Darryl
As a guitarist/vocalist/music educator and facilitator, I have been an integral part of the music scene for more years than he cares to remember. A native of Cleveland, Ohio, I began studying guitar at age 12, with the innovative and legendary jazz guitarist, Bill DeArango. This provided the solid foundation necessary for me to begin performing throughout Northeastern Ohio. While continuing to perform regularly, I recognized the need to pursue a more formal musical education. Phil Rizzo, the noted composer and arranger for Stan Kenton, provided a rigorous study of theory and harmony, which led my being awarded a grant to study at Boston's prestigious Berklee College of Music. Upon graduation I moved to New York City, where I found myself in high demand, performing up to 250 gigs a year. I have an ability to move effortlessly between musical styles such as Jazz, Blues, Rock 'n Roll and Country which afforded me the opportunity to share the stage with the likes of George Benson, Alabama, The Shirelles, The Tokens, Randy Travis, The Drifters, The Four Tops, The Judds, Darlene Love and George Strait, playing notable venues such as Madison Square Garden, The Lonestar Café, The Felt Forum, and The Bottom Line.
While in New York City, I became involved in the world of voiceovers and commercial production. My voice can be heard on spots for Diet Coke, Nikon, and Volvo. Most recently I have been the voice of Amazing eLearning's software training programs.
My skills and abilities as a guitarist and vocalist have also contributed to my success as an educator and facilitator having taught music in the Alameda, San Leandro and Castro Valley school districts as well privately.
A San Francisco Bay Area resident since 1997, I remain in high demand as a performer, voiceover artist, educator and facilitator.
In these pandemic times with all lessons are online, I have had great success working with students of all ages and skill levels. Whether you are a beginning, intermediate or advanced, whether you are looking to play Blues, Jazz, Rock, Country, Folk, individually designed lessons will give you a thorough musical foundation having fun along the way. Items covered range from strumming chords and learning tabs, (an easy method of finger placement) through reading music, theory, harmony, improvising, and song writing. All ages welcome. My teaching career began as a result of sharing musical ideas with other musicians. This lead to informal gatherings and on to a more structured teaching environment.
I have taught music in the Alameda, San Leandro and Castro Valley school districts, in several music stores as well my private studio .

Each student is evaluated so as to determine a point of departure. Once a direction is determined, we move forward with materials that are best suited to the student's individual musical derires, needs and style of learning. This generally include printed, audio and video materials.
I have worked with students from 5 to 90, with each student posessing and expressing their own abilities.
The best advice is to shop around and ask questions. There needs to be a rapport between the student and the instructor.
I have performed at over 4000 events. The best gig is where the musicians function as a cohesive unit much like a sports team. I lead a trio recently that was just that.
