About David
My teaching approach:
My teaching approach is to teach my students the skills needed to be an educated musician and develop the playing skills required to become active in various musical settings. Ultimately, my goal is to empower my students to be able to teach themselves. I'm a method teacher who specializes in teaching beginners and getting them to an intermediate level of musicianship within a couple of years. Areas of study: reading standard notation, tablature, a "working" knowledge of music theory and ear training, developing good timing, technique rhythm/chord vocabulary, and Improvisational skills.
My influences are:
My first teacher, Jimi Hendrix, David Gilmour, Wes Montgomery, Joe Pass, the plethora of musical groups and friends I've played with these last 32 years

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following:
The first lesson time is free of charge. I talk about what it takes to be successful and enjoy your lesson experiences. For existing players I take time to evaluate where they are at in the areas they've been working on and then I come up with a game plan for them. It's also a time for them to meet me and decide if they believe that I'd be a good teacher for them.
A guitar lesson with me might entail the following:
1. Tune. 2. Play through the music assigned the previous lesson and then work on any challenging passages or technique problems, if there are any. 3. I play the next weeks assigned music and talk about the challenging areas.
The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following:
An ideal beginning student will play through the assignment materials 30 minutes everyday. An ideal intermediate student will practice the method materials around an hour everyday.
