About Johnna

Post Covid, the majority of my students decided to remain with zoom lessons, however, I do offer in-home lessons in select areas of Atlanta.

My teaching approach: It is my goal as a music educator to nurture the talents of aspiring musicians of the next generation or simply share the joy of music with the novice player.

My influences are: Too many to list. I enjoy listening to and playing a lot of different music.

Guitar Techniques: Lead guitar, Rhythm guitar, Fingerstyle, Classical Guitar, Vocal Accompaniment, Improvisation, Reading Music, Music Theory, Scales and Exercises, Song Writing.

Experience & Education: BA & MM in music. Two decades of performing and teaching experience.

Your first guitar lesson with me might include the following: During a first lesson I assess the current level and ability of a student and develop a curriculum that is catered to meet the musical needs and interests of each person. You will learn how to develop technique, expand your knowledge in music theory, ear training, learn songs that are attainable for your current level, and develop an at home practice strategies to help you get to your musical goals with ease.

A guitar lesson with me might entail the following: Each lesson is geared towards the individual needs of the student. I have successfully prepared students for performances, competitions, college auditions, and assisted in the creation of CD's. My students have performed in various recitals, musicals, ensembles (both children & adult ensembles), received merit achievements in Royal School of Music testing, many college admission successes, as well as building the skills of a novice player.

The qualities I look for in an ideal guitar student might include the following: My idea student is one that is excited to learn more about the guitar and puts in an honest effort to do so regardless of experience or skill level. Enthusiasm is everything.

A fun part of my work is witnessing successes, big or small, with my students. When someone reaches that "Aha" moment and everything we've been working on makes sense and is articulated well through their guitar playing... this makes me happy.

Wow, flashback time. My first students were the neighbors kids when I was in high school. I didn't charge them anything, it was fun for me.

About the lesson

A wide range of guitar students have crossed my path over the years. Anywhere from the novice player, beginner music enthusiast, to the professional seeking new ideas. As far as intermediate and advanced, I have successfully prepared students for performances, competitions, college auditions, and assisted in the creation of songwriters CD's. Many of my students have performed in various recitals, musicals, ensembles (both children and adult ensembles), paid gigs, and many college admission successes.

A first lesson is me accessing the students current level and aspirations in order to help carve out a path to lead to that person's goal. A person trying to learn to read and play classical will have a different path than the student that wants to play popular music they can sing along with. Either way, starting with the rudiments (scales & exercises) are essential in developing hand strength and dexterity in order to play the songs we all aspire to perform.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
Having a clear idea of what you are trying to learn is helpful. Example, not all teachers teach complete beginners...

Informing your future teacher of all your musical background is helpful. Even if you played piano for one year when you were 8 years old. You'd be surprised what your 8 year old self put into your long term memory to be explored further as an adult. Also, what music do you like? what are you listening to?

MOST LESSONS take place on zoom. In-person lessons are available in select areas of Atlanta and have different pricing than zoom lessons.

My rate is $70 per hour:

30min = $140 per month ($35per lesson)

45min=$210 per month ($52.50per lesson) most popular

60min=$280 per month ($70per lesson)
