About Adam

My teaching style appeals to a persons natural abilities, and YES, everyone has them! I have been fascinated by music for as long as I can remember and have been a working/performing musician for nearly 45 years. I fully believe that the language of music is natural to all people. There is NO society on Earth that does not listen to and perform music, and I can't think of a greater gift that I can give than to help someone learn to play and my style of teaching will have a student playing usually within 10 minutes!!! I developed my ideas by simply listening to my students say that the lessons were too stuffy and ridgid, and were NOT fun. Fun things are learned and repeated.

I am giving someone a gift that can remain with them for life. I have developed a system that helps a student feel comfortable and access the natural abilities they have.

I started when I was in High School at the request of my instructors. I went to a Preparatory High School where there was an instructor for nearly every instrument.

I will always be a student. I started on snare drum in 5th grade Elementary School Band. I began playing a full kit on my own and took formal lessons when I reached High School. I was hired at age 17 to take over drums for a working band called Stainless Steel here in Baton Rouge. At the same time I was also hired by another local working band called The Elevators. I was working every weekend in clubs while I was still in school ( common in Louisiana during the early 80's). I was Captain of the percussion squad and played in both Symphonic and jazz band. I have toured as support for many Internationally known bands, and I hire out as a substitute for local acts. I taught myself to play guitar though now I study with a longtime friend who is a graduate of Berkely Music College in Boston. I will always be a student.

About the lesson

First -after the meet and greet stage, I will ask the student to share with me what types of music they regularly listen to. Next I'll ask how long they've listened to those styles, and what do they like most about them.

I've given "many" lessons over the years, and Ive found that those questions let a new student feel at ease with a new instructor. People absorb and retain things that they are actually interested in, and learn easier from a teacher who wants to help them learn what they like.

I have given lessons to all levels of students. I am most happy with people who really want to play but didn't realize the fun part and are close to giving up. My style of teaching will have a person playing within 10 minutes.

Hire someone who wants the lessons to be fun, and who listens as well as they talk.

Since we are dealing with the Covid issue, things aren't on a normal level for Louisiana. I love Bourbon St in NOLA. A person can take in so many different genres just walking down the street.

A few things worth thinking about before reaching out
It's important for students to ask about availability plus date and time schedules as well - the student and the teacher. Also, if there is a particular type of music the student wants to learn, he/she should ask if they will need anything other than their normal instruments to learn the piece.

Details

I charge a flat rate of $25.00 per hour. If I have to travel out of Baton Rouge I add $1.00 per minute of travelling time and that is calculated my my GPS.
