About Brian

Brian Turner began playing guitar in 1968 and he has performed and recorded professionally for many years. Throughout his career, Brian has provided quality musical entertainment for a wide variety of audiences; from local area performances at The House of Blues, Rockefeller’s, Fitzgerald’s, The Houston Music Hall, The Houston Club, country clubs, restaurants and festivals including The Texas Renaissance Festival, A Taste of Houston, and The Conroe Cajun Catfish Festival. Brian has gained the reputation of being an outstanding musician. He is well known for his versatility and ability to play many different styles of music. Brian Turner, as a guitar instructor, began teaching professionally in 1977. He teaches private lessons at his music studio located in Humble Music Center at 1122 First Street in Humble, Texas. He also uses Skype and Messenger for online students. He teaches guitar, bass, mandolin, banjo, dobro, lap steel, ukulele, and cuatro.

I was a student taking lessons in a music store. My teacher recommended me to fill a vacancy. That was in 1979.

I had private lessons for eight years. I play jazz, blues, classical, rock, celtic, bluegrass, country etc. I have been teaching lessons and performing professionally (full time) since 1979.

About the lesson

If he/she is not a a total beginner, I determine where they are in their journey with a few questions. But, for beginners, I typically begin by teaching a few chords and I explain basic terms such as keys and positions. We will also discuss technique and learn the major scale and the blues scale in the first position. I will also recommend a book or two for sight reading and theory.

Every kind you can imagine. Ages 6 to 80. One of my students, Joel White, won first place in jazz ensemble compititions, in Texas, in 2016.

Be sure to research musicians from the past. It is hard to develop a unique style if you only listen to contemporary music.

I saw Jerry Doiuglas in concert recently. That was great!

(Some adults just prefer using tab and that is ok. But you need to consider what your goals are).

Lessons are $25 for 30 minutes. I prefer to be paid montly in advance. At least one lesson has to be paid in advance to reserve the time slot.
