About William
As head of the guitar department at Boston Conservatory for 20 years, and head of the classical guitar programs at UMass Lowell and UMass Dartmouth for almost 10 years, I have worked with students of all levels including those of very high caliber. This experience has helped me to analyze just about every possible technical issue and I am able to pinpoint problems and offer suggestions to resolve the issues in a very efficient and targeted manner.
Through my training and experiences playing with top notch musicians for many years I am able to craft stylized interpretations of many different styles of music, and I love guiding and encouraging my students to play as expressively as possible. Technique is a means to an end, and the ultimate goal is to make beautiful music on the guitar.
I love playing the guitar, and being able to share this love with students is very rewarding to me. I really enjoy interacting with all of my students, and we always have a great time in our lessons!
Master of Music degree in Classical Guitar Performance- Boston Conservatory, magna cum laude
Bachelor of Arts degree in Classical Guitar Performance- William Paterson College, cum laude
Master class studies with Manuel Barrueco, David Russell, Oscar Ghiglia, Sharon Isbin

I have worked with students at all levels, from beginner through professional.
Make sure the instructor is a real classical guitarist. Many teacher simply list all styles to get more students, and they may have only dabbled with classical.

I have been a classical guitar student of Bill's for the past 6 months. In retirement, I have decided to take what was an "off and on" affair with the classical guitar (I'm not a beginner) and, instead, commit the necessary time and energy to truly learning the instrument. These have been my first serious classical guitar lessons. Prior to these lessons, I was entirely "self-taught" which means I created a whole bunch of bad habits for myself and was not progressing at all. Bill refers to me as a "remedial" student which I think is a perfect description of my playing. Through Bill, I have learned proper technique which, in turn, has improved my tonality and musicality with the classical guitar. Bill has identified my bad habits, broken them down, shown the proper way to overcome them and makes sure I don't "back-slide" into my bad habits again. Bill paces the lessons according to ability, not covering material that's too advanced while still ensuring that the lesson is challenging. In each lesson, Bill is positive, encouraging yet kindly critical so that I know I am making progress yet always aware of what areas I need to work on. Bill has the right "make-up" for a teacher and I am pleased, and without reservation, to give Bill a 5 star rating.
I started lessons with Bill to learn classical guitar after 5 years of self-taught electric and steel string acoustic playing. My playing has improved immensely since I started working with him. Not only has he introduced me to classical guitar but he has taught me how to effectively practice to constantly improve. Bill has a wealth of experience and knowledge to draw upon and I cannot say enough good things. A++
"Bill is the best teacher around. His extensive performance experience makes all the difference - he knows every tip, trick and nuance in the book that changes every piece from just a set of notes to a performance of color, grace and subtlety. His knowledge of the guitar repertoire never fails to amaze. And he's wonderfully patient with everyone - you don't have to play like Bream or Russell."
"Bill is the best instrumental teacher I've ever had. He has the rare gift of being extremely supportive while upholding high expectations. He doesn't allow you to cut corners and works hard to help you solve your musical challenges. I highly recommend Bill as a teacher."
"I have been a student of Bill's for almost three years. Bill's teaching is characterized by clarity of expression, high standards, patience and an upbeat and pleasant disposition. He is always clear and direct when explaining the technical aspects of playing- no matter how complex the matter at hand. He holds you ( and himself) to a high standard- no shortcuts- you learn to do it right. Yet he is so pleasant to be with that every minute of every lesson is truly enjoyable. Every time I leave I am ready to practice and can't wait to return."
